A Choir of Ghosts’ musical foundation is a solid ground consisting of a reminiscence of Kurt Cobain, covered with the water, the sun, and the air of bands like The Tallest Man On Earth and the Hollow Coves, which give you a feeling of various shades of nostalgia.
A Choir of Ghosts has had a few singles since 2016 – “Morning Light” currently has over 1.4 million streams on Spotify, and the trend is rising – and released an EP that received international media coverage and carried him across the borders of the Swedish wilderness, among others on extensive tours through Central Europe.
With the release of his widely acclaimed debut album “An Ounce of Gold” in April 2020, the Swede by choice was once again able to secure euphoric international press praise. After a spring European tour that was canceled due to Covid-19, “Oceans” is the second musical sign of life from A Choir of Ghosts.

LYRICS:

I’m trying to remember
The sound of your voice
The way it lights up
Like aurora unfolds
And I don’t think twice
I know it’ll be alright
When I’m alone amongst the trees
Drowning in the sea

I’m pounding at the door
Saying I can’t take no more
I wanna go home
I stand here in the cold
I can see I’m getting old
Don’t let go

I know I ask too much
Are you alright?
I’m always scared of losing
I don’t like to fight
Do you have any memories?
Of a life from before
It’s a time I’ve forgotten
I don’t care anymore

I’m pounding at the door
Saying I can’t take no more
I wanna go home
I stand here in the cold
I can see I’m getting old
Don’t let go

When the moonlight hits the heavens
It’s your time to shine
I don’t know where we’re going
But I know we’ll be fine

I’m pounding at the door
Saying I can’t take no more
I wanna go home
I stand here in the cold
I can see I’m getting old
Don’t let go

Tell us how you build up the tune for this song.
I generally start with the guitar, figure out an intro and verse chord pattern, then once I like that I’ll start to try out different melodies by humming. Once I feel like the melody is good I’ll start to add words and figure out in which way I want the words to flow. I generally use a piano to write harmonies and then I’ll play around with midi and write other parts!

Tell us how fans are reacting to your music.
I feel like they’re reacting really well to each release. I’m always so worried when I release music…in case it’s just me that thinks it’s good! But so far so good!

Tell us your point of view on the quality of production of today’s songs to old songs and point out what you think has changed.
I don’t think the quality of the production has gotten better, I just think that technology has moved on so far and gotten so good and relatively user-friendly. I am one of those people though that feels like music was better before. Stuff like Unchained Melody and Bridge Over Troubled Water wouldn’t be beaten by anything in the charts today, both production-wise and songwriting-wise.

Tell us any interesting experience in your music career that is significant.
My entire musical career has been a rollercoaster, I never expected anyone to listen, and then all of a sudden I was on tour through Europe, and loads of people were listening to my music. My favorite moment was when I joined up with some musicians in Karlsruhe and played a show with them, it was the best atmosphere I’ve been in for a long time!

Tell us how you come across the lyrics of this song.
So, my parents live in England and I haven’t been able to see them for over a year, and Sweden just extended its travel ban from the UK until August 31 so there’s a long time to go! I was also thinking about how all of the restrictions feel now, and it’s kind of hard to remember ‘what going to the pub’ feels like, or being at a festival with fifty thousand other people.

Discuss how you plan to create a piece of timeless music that your fans can cherish forever.
I guess my plan every time I write a song is that my fans will cherish it forever, but it’s a tough nut to crack. Every new song I write I feel it’s like my best ever; it’s just the hope that everyone else feels the same way. ‘Oceans’ was my tribute to this pandemic, so maybe that will be something that becomes timeless, a bit like a time capsule in a song.

Tell us what triggers your creativity.
It can be anything from a movie, a song, listening to a stream of water. But I’ve realized that if I stress myself into writing, it doesn’t go well, I have to let the song come to me so to speak. Sometimes I’ll write a song a day for a week and sometimes I won’t write for three months. I used to stress myself out about it and give myself a hard time. But I’ve come to the conclusion that waiting for something is better than forcing nothing.

Tell us how you generate musical ideas for your composition.
That’s a good question…it’s different with each song, sometimes I’ll sit there with my computer and go through 1000 ideas to realize it was better before, and some other times I already have the whole composition in my head. Each song needs a different approach to it and it all depends on what the song wants.

Tell us your greatest song and state the reason.
I guess my own favorite is Ester, it was the song that started A Choir of Ghosts and I wouldn’t be where I am today without that song. If I was to choose someone else’s I’d choose “Bible Belt” by Dry The River, I don’t have a huge reason, just that the track is absolutely mind-blowing.

Discuss how you compose this song.
I was actually in the studio recording a different song and I started playing the intro whilst I was messing about with reverb and stuff, and I was like “oh that’s nice” and I started to hum a melody, and within thirty minutes the song was written and I’d recorded a demo!

Elaborate on the song.
The song is all about me wanting to get back to our old normal, meet people, go out, and be social. I hate that wanting to be social and wanting to travel has been such a sore spot over the past eighteen months, I just hope that soon we will see the end of this. I miss playing concerts!

Elaborate on your artist’s name and the title of the album.
So my artist’s name is what I thought of one night when I realized that every musical endeavor I’ve been in through my life has created the musician I am today, and even though all those projects and band are long gone, all of the music and experiences from those live on through me. So all of my past experiences are the ghosts, and I’m the choir that brings them together.
