State your reason for choosing music as a career.
There is nothing I enjoy doing more than writing and performing music so it makes sense to put my energy into it and do it full time.
Tell us how you write the lyrics to your song.
I tend to draw inspiration from all sorts of different places and songs always come together in a different way. Most often, I come up with chords first, then a melody and then write the lyrics. In the case of “All or Nothing”, when I started playing the chords it made me think of a road trip or life on the road. That led to writing the verses and gave me the feeling of struggle and accomplishment. This led to the chorus, and then the song really started coming together.

“ADAM WENDLER’s ‘All Or Nothing’ is a folk-pop extravaganza, where the colors of the roads long traveled, come to life within our affection for the inner child within us. The ‘letting go’ of our senses, often is needed, to kick start our cemented notions of what IS and what SHOULD BE. New directions need bold decisions. That first step starts with that ‘first heartbeat’ towards that goal. ‘All Or Nothing’ is an inspirational single that is easy to like and perfect for those days that are very hard. Adam’s cheering for you. ” — Come here Floyd
“‘All or Nothing’ is the welcomingly infectious single from the brilliant Canadian artist Adam Wendler. Indie-Folk-Pop in genre, this single is a catchy heartfelt look into life and love which is relatable by all. The single starts with stripped-back vocals and an acoustic guitar which reiterates the Country-Folk feel. The acoustic guitar is played extremely well with a fingerpicking style that is blissful. ‘All or Nothing’ is the type of song which would stand alone with no other instrumentation needed. An acoustic version would be superb but the track is further enhanced as the other instruments kick in. We hear a kicked drum which is strong and stable in its rhythm, always dependable and feels like the heartbeat of the song. The chorus is catchy and is further enhanced by the double-tracked vocals which give emphasis to the well-constructed heartfelt lyrics. We also hear a bass, a tambourine, and high hats. These are accompaniments which are used in perfect measure, never intrusive and always accompanying the main stars: the guitars and vocals. The song strips back for an instrumental accompanied by ‘Oooohs’, it then builds back up slowly for a catchy chorus which will be suck in your head all day! Wendler’s voice is simply magical. The amount of feeling, tone, and heart he is able to portray is really special. Wendler reminds us of Neil Young on this single. There are some gorgeous lyrics on the song too, ‘It’s not much but it’s everything to me”, is a heartbreakingly gorgeous lyric that strikes to the heart of the song. His cadences are well thought out and his phrasing is on the money every time. The delivery is vulnerable, warm, and heartfelt in equal measures. Wendler’s writing has reminiscent elements and his fingerpicking guitar style also takes in influences but it is unmistakably Adam Wendler. We were also incredibly impressed with the production of ‘All or Nothing’. The mix, production, and mastering are of an incredibly high standard. The overall sound is crisp yet warm with many luscious tones in between. In 2017 Wendler won ‘The Next Big Thing’ (radioeins) and ‘Songslam Neukölln’ (Berlin), with a single as strong as ‘All or nothing’ it is easy to see why! Do not delay, check out this exciting artist today!” — FVReviews
“The artist opens up the song with the lyrics “we’re cold and we’re broken. Lost in the wide-open; so far from the way we used to be” accompanied by a hopeless-sounding guitar. Based on those lyrics, it’s safe to assume the track will summarize how lost the artist is in the world; however, he does the complete opposite. Accompanied by rich harmonies, the artist sings “it’s been a long time coming and I’ve had my doubts. Gotta keep on running. It’s all or nothing now.” He continues to talk about how he makes-do with what he has and how “there’s no place” he’d “rather be.” It’s a song that will reassure and restore hope in any listener in the form of a catchy tune.” — Tongue Tied Magazine
Discuss your life outside the music world.
I grew up in Goderich, Ontario, Canada. It’s a fairly small town located on Lake Huron. I was always really into swimming, and being on the water in general. I like to go stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing.
After finishing high school, I did a lot of traveling and still do. I love meeting new people and seeing new places. I spent a lot of time in New Zealand, where I met my girlfriend, which led me to Germany.
I’m now living in Potsdam, Germany pursuing music and having a good time while I’m at it.
Discuss your music career.
I have released three solo albums in the past few years and have done tours in Germany and Canada. I’ve been trying to play as much as possible while also writing and releasing my songs regularly. Last year was a pretty big one, and I managed to release a lot of new music videos and a brand new album.
Elaborate on your artist’s name.
My artist name is my real birth name. I decided to go with my real name for a couple of reasons. I always want to make sure my music is totally genuine and comes from me, how I want it to sound. It seemed logical to use my real name as it adequately stands for the music I put out. I also think it simply has a good ring to it.
List your five favorite music videos with reasons.
Thriller – Michael Jackson, Take Me To Church – Hozier, Smells Like Teen Spirit – Nirvana, Shape of You – Ed Sheeran, Stan – Eminem.
I like all of them for a variety of reasons. Some have humor, some have provided a deeper symbolic meaning, and some are just raw emotion put to video. One thing in common with all of these videos is that I don’t want them to end.
Tell us your source of inspiration.
I get my inspiration from a lot of different places. Much of it comes from travelling and personal experiences but current social or political events also inspire me. Sometimes just reading a good book or watching a good movie is enough to inspire a song.
Tell us your experience of dealing with fans.
My experience with fans has been really positive. I always meet with them after I play a concert and generally get really good feedback. I love to meet with anybody who wants to talk but sometimes it can be difficult to stop one conversation and move on to the next one to give everybody a turn.
Elaborate on the recording of this song.
“All or Nothing” was recorded at the Red Bull studios in Auckland, New Zealand. A good kiwi friend of mine rigged up the recording session while I was in Germany. He said he could get a session put together there and asked if I wanted to do it.
The production is fairly stripped down with just a few layers on it. I wanted it to sound close to how I play it live.
Tell us about your future projects.
I plan on releasing another album this year, along with more music videos and more collaborations.
List the names of those that have supported you so far.
Spinnup, Radio Eins, My friends and family, all the venues and festivals I have played at, producers I have worked with and many more!
Tell us your point of view on vocal tuning.
I think vocal tuning is a very useful tool when done correctly. In some genres of music the style is to have a completely full auto-tune effect, and in other styles vocal tuning is used just to put the singer in the proper pitch. Both are valid uses. However, in some genres, sometimes the vocals don’t need to sound totally perfect and over-perfecting the production can take away from the feeling.
Tell us your thought on quality and quantity for the release of songs.
I think it’s important to have both. Quality is really subjective, so in my opinion, as long as the artist is happy with how his song sounds, then he may as well release it…
Tell us your viewpoint on comparing music career to non-music career.
Pursuing a music career can be very difficult. It lacks security and stability, but it is full of reward. Whereas a career with steady work hours and an hourly wage allows one to make financial plans more easily, and have a more stress-free lifestyle. It all depends on what you want out of life.
In my case, I love making music more than anything else, and I’m willing to find a way to make it work and bring my music to people who want to hear it. It’s all worthwhile when you play a concert and you can feel the energy of the crowd and know that people are right there with you loving the music and the vibe you are providing.
Tell us your opinion on categorizing music into genres and sub-genres.
I think categorizing music into genres and sub-genres is really useful in the digital age we are in. There is so much music being produced and released, so having it organized by genre makes sense. However, it is sometimes really difficult to put a name to a style of music, especially when it has many different genres blended in to it. In my opinion, this makes it harder for more experimental and less genre-specific styles to get attention.
State the genre you despise most with reason.
I wouldn’t say there is any genre that I despise. There are some songs I’m not fond of, but I don’t think I could say I dislike the entire genre they belong to.
List your five favorite movies with reasons.
The Shawshank Redemption, Catch Me if You Can, Forest Gump, The Departed, and The Wolf of Wall Street.
I like these movies because they are all inspiring or motivating. I could watch all of them multiple times. They are all gripping and have you hanging on the edge of your seat from start until finish.
State the title of the song and the meaning.
The song is called “All or Nothing”. It’s about being on a journey to get somewhere and going through all the bumps in the road on the way. It’s also about making the most of the situation you’re in and enjoying the journey to get to a goal as much as enjoying reaching the goal itself.
State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.
The album is also called “All or Nothing”. I thought this title did the best job of summing up the album in its entirety. It is full of songs with different themes, but an underlying message is a concept of giving it your all to get to a goal and not taking ‘No’ for an answer.
