Share your biography with us.
My name is Jason Lee. I am a singer-songwriter and I go by the alias Black.
I was born on December 20th, 1995 in Seoul, South Korea. From a very young age, my parents made me learn English and later led me to attend foreign schools in different countries like South Africa, Thailand, and the US. This had a profound influence on my music, as I was able to be exposed to a lot of foreign music instead of just Korean music.
The starting point of my career was back in 2010 when I was 14 years old. It was at this time when I discovered the band ‘Queen.’ Discovering Queen was a profound experience to me, and I was immediately impacted by their music. Before I knew it, I learned how to play the guitar and started a band with my friends where I was the lead vocal.
A few months later, I broke up with the band. I was attending middle school in Thailand back then, but I had to return to my home country to reunite with my family. This led me to practice music more by myself rather than with friends, and it was at this time I started developing an interest in songwriting.
Fast forward to 2016, I was attending college in the US, slightly forgetting about my passion for music, and getting involved in things that may not be the best choices for my future. I came to a point one day where I just said to myself, I really need to start painting my own future in a way that I can be satisfied with. That day, I told my parents that I am going to return to South Korea to pursue my music career. Ever since then, I have been pursuing my musical career with vigor.
I feel like every single thing that happened to me since I was a kid has slowly led me to the path I am on right now, and I feel blessed for that. Throughout my career, I aim to become the most dominant, most proficient musician in the world, and exhibit my ability to make all types of music, without being confined to a specific genre.

Discuss your recording experience with your producer.
I’ve only recorded by myself in my bedroom studio. It is fun but hard at the same time.
Every time I record a song, I have to learn new things to try and make things work for my new song, and I often catch myself getting very mad at myself for not being able to produce the sound I want. This process can be hard and irritating, but it eventually works out if I keep pushing.

Discuss what comes first and last while creating a song.
When I make a song, first, I do my best to emulate in real life the exact idea I had in mind. After that is done, during the final stages, I try to touch on the final details of my music and try to look over any mistakes I might have made.

Tell us the piece of advice you will give to a new artist.
Believe in yourself.

Discuss your worse experience in the music business.
There’s nothing that comes to mind. I’d say every experience I had so far has been fun and meaningful, no matter how good or bad it was.

Tell us how you deal with rejection.
I don’t think of rejection as a failure. In fact, I don’t get fazed by failure at all. Failure is just another part of the process to achieve success.

Tell us what you are doing to impact the people around you.
I try not to impact/change the people around me. I would rather focus my sole energy on trying to impact and change myself into becoming a better person, and that itself is a hard enough task already.

Tell us the music that makes you happy.
Music that scratches that itching spot on my soul.

Tell us how you make instrumentation to your song.
It always depends on what type of songs/instrumentation I’m trying to make. I use either midi or real instruments. I try to make the original sample sound as close as possible to the sound I had in mind, and then use reverb, compression, and different plugins to mold the sound into exactly what I had in mind.

Tell us the goals you aim to achieve when creating a song.
I aim to portray a certain type of feeling throughout my song, and I make sure that that feeling will be transmitted to my listeners.

Tell us your approach to songwriting.
For me, it all starts in the head. I come up with a song idea, and develop that into a plausible piece of music. Then, I do my best to emulate that exact song idea using my laptop – After doing that, I sometimes make structure changes, and other detail changes using my laptop.

Tell us how you plan to develop a unique music style.
Just listen to the music you like, and that will translate into the music you make…

Tell us how to record a song.
First, you need a mic and a preamp, and a useful monitor speaker. Then, you use the equipment to emulate the song idea you had in mind.

Tell us if you are collaborating with other songwriters or you write alone.
After being in bands with so many different people, I eventually learned that I do best when I do music alone. That way I can express exactly what I want without any interference.

Discuss your experience with fans.
I’ve had some fans get in touch with me and tell me how much they love my music, and how my music impacted them. These messages definitely help motivate me to work hard.

Tell us if you consider a song placement in TV or Film.
I’d love that! When I make my songs, I sometimes picture my music playing in the background of some vintage movie.

Elaborate on the song.
As the title suggests, Revolution D-1 is a waltz song that depicts the mindset of a revolutionary leader, as he encourages his comrades the day before the revolution/rebellion.
Although the song is classical in nature, it is a fierce song that any music lover can get pumped to.

Elaborate on your artist name and the title of the album.
When I first came up with the name Black, I just thought it was a cool name to have as a musician. Later, I gave a more elaborate meaning to that name. Black is the color that absorbs all different colors. In the same way, I am a musician that absorbs what is useful from all different types of genres and interprets that in my own unique way.
