K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade - For My People

K.O.G – For My People

K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade - For My People

K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade – For My People

High energy West African vibes from Ghana via Sheffield….. Afro-fusion 8-piece band K.O.G & the Zongo Brigade are pleased to announce the release of their debut album ‘Wahala Wahala’, released via Heavenly Sweetness.

Under the guidance of the outrageously talented Ghanaian force of nature Kweku Sackey, also known as K.O.G, and the whirlwind of energy that is Jamaican rapper Franz Von, the Zongo Brigade deliver infectious, high-energy West African grooves via Sheffield, drawing on afrobeat, soul, funk, rock, hip hop and reggae which has fast gained recognition in London and all over the UK.

K.O.G’s signature mix of high-energy songs, raps, operatic vocal effects, along with the hard-hitting patois raps from the spirited Franz Von and a dedicated band of serious musical badmen, has led the band to perform on some of the biggest stages including Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds Festivals and numerous clubs and venues around Europe.

K.O.G & the Zongo Brigade have also received support across national and global radio including BBC Radio 6 Music, BBC Introducing Sheffield and BBC Radio 1.

With a backdrop of unmistakable African rhythms that include electric brass, thunderous percussion and sharp-edge guitar, ‘Wahala Wahala’ takes possession of the body as the words excite the mind.

Racism, rejection, inequality, exile – the subject matter is always serious but the delivery irresistibly upbeat and rhythmic, guaranteed to get the feet moving because in every pain, there is also joy.

Writing and composing the songs himself with a little help from the Zongo Brigade, collectively they felt that the best way to catch the energy of the band was to record ‘Wahala Wahala’ as live as not to lose any of its original musical combustion.

Deeply rooted in stories from Africa, the album draws on love, peace and social issues.

K.O.G & the Zongo Brigade’s motto “Unity in Diversity” stems from Kweku’s African origins and also embraces the eclectic mix of nationalities which make up the band.

Leaving his native Ghana in the late 2000s’, Kweku Sackey’s journey to England was not without ‘Wahala’ (‘problems’ in Hausa, and a general West African word meaning ‘stress’ and ‘trouble’).

Eventually settling in Sheffield, he encountered many battles along the way which he was determined to fight like an African warrior.

By learning to fuse these bad vibrations with positive energies, K.O.G and his Zongo Brigade’s form of ghetto music began to take shape and despite the distance between K.O.G and Ghana, the links have never been broken. Family, friends, and music – he has always kept one foot strongly rooted in Africa, with the other free and adventurous.

New single ‘For My People’ merges the indigenous rhythms of Africa with an energetic mix of tones and grooves while songs like ‘Suro Nipa’ and ‘Home’ offer subtle takes on jazz.

K.O.G & the Zongo Brigade’s African fusion absorbs everything in its path without ever diluting its soul.

Hip hop, street sounds, mutated jazz, indigenous music are all key ingredients while the fizzing ‘Mad-Up’ is a heady brew of rock, ragga, funk and soul.

“This album brings to light the strength and endurance of us as HUMANS. A personal journey and documentation of most of the obstacles we have faced as we have moved from two different worlds and how we have overcome these struggles through the freedom of art and music through a firm connection with our roots and culture.

It’s music from our soul telling stories how we were told growing up and merging grooves and African rhythms to exhibit the spirit of AFRICA in relation to where we are in the diaspora”, says K.O.G.

Charlie Straw - Light Up For Me

Charlie Straw – Light Up For Me

Charlie Straw - Light Up For Me

Charlie Straw – Light Up For Me

Charlie Straw is an artist whose musical ability is matched only by his storytelling ability, and undeniable work ethic.

Originally from The Wirral, Charlie is all about telling stories through his music and he’s got plenty to recall.

Whether it’s his time recording music in a basement in Thailand, or the time he spent 30 days playing a show every night, sleeping on sofa’s up and down the UK.

In the age of internet based artists, Charlie is an artist getting out to learn from as many difference experiences as he can, connecting with people in a variety of ways.

First and foremost though, Charlie is an incredible songwriter. His string of releases has seen him sell out three London headline shows.

He’s performed at Citadel, Wilderness and The Great Escape, as well as supporting James Bay, Marika Hackman, Nathaniel Rateliff and James Morrison.

He’s also picked up significant support from DSP’s, racking up over 3 Million Streams on Spotify and top 10 viral positions in the UK and across Europe. He’s also been featured by the likes of Clash Magazine and The Independent.

“Light Up For Me is about that moment when you allow yourself to fall in love with someone. I had never fully given myself over to love and I wrestled with it for a while, but this song is me letting go and moving away from that place of isolation.”

2019 sees the talented songwriter share a new EP, kicking off with the anthemic “Light Up For Me”.

The track marks a change in musical style, combining feel-good guitar pop with an emotional vulnerability rarely showcased by Charlie.

“I’m the happiest I’ve been for a long time and I want my music to show that…”

Bedouin Soundclash - Clock Work

Bedouin Soundclash – Clock Work

Bedouin Soundclash - Clock Work

Bedouin Soundclash – Clock Work

After a nine-year hiatus, Toronto’s Bedouin Soundclash return with brand new single ‘Clock-Work’, released via Mr Bongo.

Recorded in the summer humidity at the mouth of the Mississippi, ‘Clock-Work’ bristles and fizzes with jangling Big Band swing-pop and hints towards a new creative peak with a heavy New Orleans influence.

Calling on the iconic Preservation Hall Jazz Band to provide brass, Bedouin tap into the flamboyant tradition of brass band parades and the result is a horn-heavy, jazz-inspired track that draws from its historic surroundings.

Almost a decade on from the release of the 2010 album ‘Light The Horizon’, the band have been busy in the studio once more after a period where it wasn’t clear whether they would record any music together again.

Lead singer Jay Malinowski wrote a novel and released two solo albums while bassist Eon Sinclair was busy doing session work and DJing.

“One morning I was sitting at the piano in my house and “Clock-Work” came to me,” says lead singer Jay Malinowski talking about the new single. “I thought this is something new, I think it’s a Bedouin song – I put it on a break-beat and sampled these horns from an old big band swing record and sent it off to Eon.”

Eon adds, “Jay sent me a demo and it hit me right away. The use of the breakbeat, the piano, and the horns – It still felt like Bedouin with the subtle off-beat piano but was fresh.”

The single is taken from the band’s fifth album, set for release later this year. Drawing on a wide range of influences that include New Orleans jazz, ska / reggae, electronica, pop and rock, it shows not only the eclectic post-punk-world-beat tendencies of Bedouin Soundclash but also the cities that surrounded them.

Spanning two communities, the album was recorded in New Orleans with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band and in Vancouver at the St. James Church with the children of the St. James Music Academy…

Bedouin Soundclash have toured all over the world and have shared the stage with the likes of No Doubt, Ben Harper, Damian Marley, The Roots, The Interrupters, Gogol Bordello, Bad Brains, and Thievery Corporation among many others.

imi - The Fence

imi – The Fence

imi - The Fence

imi – The Fence

Leeds based singer / songwriter Imi has released her brand new EP, consisting of three intense and retrocentic tracks that perfectly encapsulate the lush and gloriously produced future-pop she masterfully intertwines with dark atmospherics.

Imi creates a dream-like world utilizing the best of synth-wave soundscapes with a twist of modern performance art and an astoundingly powerful vocal.

Opener ‘The Fence’ recalls ‘Travelogue’ era Human League or Kraftwerk with the ethereal voice of Kate Bush while ‘I Feel Alright’ ventures further deeper into the foreboding. The unforgettable ‘Margins’ puts Imi centre stage with a backing of driving drum machines, delicate keys and a pulsating rhythm.

“Lines was inspired by Jim Jarmusch’s film ‘Paterson’” Imi tells us, “which observes the structured monotony of life, and how we squeeze joy from our passions at every liberating opportunity.

The film offers a charmingly modest perception of this, but at the time it provoked some deepening frustrations at the limited prospects for myself and so many creatives.

‘Margins’ explores the peak of these frustrations, offering a mocking account of my past constraints, but over time my thoughts on this have evolved. While my ambition for change hasn’t faltered, my perspective has matured in a way that is more accepting and is able to find happiness in the everyday.

This is celebrated in ‘I Feel Alright’ which was a real breakthrough for me personally.

‘The Fence’ is the mediating balance between these two sides, and is essentially the decision you make to take control of your life and start taking responsibility for your own misfortunes or happiness.”

After self-releasing her debut single ‘Born For What?’ in December 2017, Imi made her first live appearance on BBC Music Introducing and received support from Steve Lamacq’s show on BBC Radio 6 Music.

2018 saw her support the likes of Let’s Eat Grandma and Ghostpoet and perform her first festival slot at Tramlines in Sheffield.

Edith – Don’t Wanna Think

Edith – Don’t Wanna Think

Edith – Don’t Wanna Think

Edith – Don’t Wanna Think

London-based songwriter Edith is a force to be reckoned with for 2019.

Working with The Sonic Crew (Idris Elba / Diplo / Lethal Bizzle) has brought her distinctive brand of pop music to life.

Born in Romania, before relocating to England, she began writing songs at school as an outlet for emotions she was unable to vocalise.

Creating music was the only path from a young age, with Edith joining any musical assembly available at her school, while also learning guitar and piano.

Her mother, who was also in a band, was a massive influence on her musical journey.

Edith wrote her first song at just 11 and hasn’t looked back since.

My parents bought me my first guitar when I was 12 and ever since that it has been my favourite thing to do.

I love writing songs, I love being able to express how I feel in melodies.

For me, my EP is my diary as every song has a story.

Inspired by contemporary pop artists such as LANY, Troye Sivan and Dua Lipa, the new single “Don’t Wanna Think” is the first track from an EP due for release in spring.

It’s a body of work that showcases the young songwriter’s talent, diversity and distinctive contemporary pop style.

The first single details a story of heartbreak, with a punchy, hook-driven pop production.

The track ebbs and flows between emotive breakdowns and powerful crescendos with prowess, displaying a songwriting ability beyond the artist’s years.

On the new single, Edith states:

‘Don’t Wanna Think’ is an incredibly significant song for me, it was written at just 16, when I was experiencing a lot of new feelings for the first time.

The message behind the song is that no matter how much we know someone isn’t right for us, or someone hurt us our hearts still crave the feeling of them being with us, so we struggle to let go.

Sometimes we struggle to let go of the memories, the feeling and all because we get used to having someone there for us. I never knew how I really felt about the relationship until I wrote this song, then it all made sense to me.

Anin Rose – No Apologies

Anin Rose – No Apologies

Anin Rose – No Apologies

Anin Rose – No Apologies

Hamburg born, London based singer Anin Rose crafts empowering pop songs with a gospel twist.

Having worked extensively conducting the London International Gospel Choir, her compositions are heavily shaped by the choral sound.

Having drawn early musical influence from the iconic Alicia Keys, with more recent influence from Emeli Sandé, Anin Rose’s heavily piano-based compositions have been moulded into an irresistible EP scheduled for release in May 2019.

Lead single ‘No Apologies’ is a gospel-influenced pop song written by Anin Rose and Anders Hojer.

Releasing on International Women’s day, it’s an empowering anthem about finding strength in vulnerability and not being apologetic about it.

The emotional magnitude of ‘No Apologies’ is supported by a chorus of female background singers, a key theme throughout her work.

Not just the pretty front of an album cover, women are being credited more and more as songwriters, producers or managers in mainstream music.

We win double the number of Grammys and remove our high heels on the red carpet. It has never been so exciting to be a woman and be surrounded by women changing the industry and striving for equality for everyone.

As a conductor of the London International Gospel Choir, Anin Rose has performed her songs with 80 choral singers, stripping the sound back for a sensational 10 all-female singer performance at her last headline show at St Giles in the Fields in 2018.

Having made her choral debut at the age of 19, her love of harmonies marries effortlessly with her passion for pop music as is evident in her recent live shows and live recordings.

Having worked recently with Freya Ridings and Jamie Grey, alongside leading performances at the o2 Shepherds Bush, The Southbank Centre and Union Chapel, the intimacy of thought within Anin Rose’s lyrics effortlessly moves audiences of all sizes.

‘No Apologies’ might be influenced by the female songwriters who shaped her early listening experiences, but Anin Rose is an artist who simply can’t be pigeonholed.

“I’ve been called too tall, too loud and too extrovert. When we wrote ‘No Apologies’ it was like turning those judgements into my actual power and celebrating the uniqueness of each one of us”
