Chelsey Coy was born into a very musical family and has been singing since before she can remember. Her voice has been heard from a very young age on records, voice-overs, and across stages in Southern California and New York City. She always knew music was something she wanted to pursue. After attending the Orange County High School of the Arts musical theatre program her senior year, she went on to graduate from The University of Southern California’s Music Business program. It was there that she started writing music and collaborating with friends she met at school.
Shortly after graduating, she met her husband and by 2009 they had formed their indie-folk band called Single Girl, Married Girl. It wasn’t until she was given a banjo (named Prudence) on her 30th birthday that she really began to love crafting songs.
After releasing an album and an EP as SGMG (the last of which was recorded with Pierre de Reeder from Rilo Kiley), Chelsey and her husband moved to New York City to start anew. They quickly found a new group of musicians in NY to continue performing under the name Single Girl, Married Girl, and started writing another album. 2017 saw the release of their most recent album, Spark.
Chelsey and her husband moved back to Los Angeles in late 2017 where she has continued to write songs and opened her own licensing company in 2019 with a collective of singers/songwriters/producers. She has released a dozen songs in the last few years under her own name, as well. Single Girl, Married Girl has a new album in the works with plans to release it in Fall 2021.

LYRICS:

The sea was calm
When I stepped in the water
Didn’t stray too far from the shore
Suddenly I’m drifting
Past the harbor
Helpless on my own
Just like before

Two steps back
One forward
The pull is strong

Two steps back
One forward
It won’t be long
It’s a tidal wave
And I can’t be saved
Sinking to my grave
It’s a tidal wave

My thoughts are spinning
Faster than the ocean
I gasp and try for one last breath of air
I yell into the void will someone save me
Probably not cause no one seems to care

Two steps back
One forward
The pull is strong
Two steps back
One forward
It won’t be long
It’s a tidal wave
And I can’t be saved
Sinking to my grave
It’s a tidal wave
It’s a tidal wave
And I can’t be saved
Sinking to my grave
It’s a tidal wave

Tell us what your fans are saying about your music.
I tend not to pay attention to what fans are saying about my music because I could go down a rabbit hole real quick if I’m in a weird headspace, but I hope people think of me as a strong singer with catchy melodies, smart lyrics, and music that resonates with their soul.

Tell us the factors you consider when writing a song.
Each song I write is an opportunity to show a new side of myself and tell a new story. Sometimes it really just depends on whatever mood I’m in at the moment. If I’m writing with someone else, I like to come to the session with a few options of either lyrical themes or melodies or both so we aren’t working from scratch, but sometimes it’s also nice to just sit down without anything and see what sparks in that particular moment (usually I have at least a topic planned out for these). I also really want to be authentic, so it can be a balancing act of what I think will be a good fit for me vocally and lyrically with what I can see if it is a specific project, TV show, film, etc. I love writing songs with strong vocal melodies because that’s what I’m drawn to first and foremost when listening to a song, but I try to be as open as possible so that the song can take shape and isn’t guided too strongly in one direction or the other until we work out the best feel and fit for the song.

Discuss the production of the song.
Pete White (co-writer and producer on this track) and I used Billie Eilish as a reference for this song, so we knew we wanted a darker, emotional sound for the production. Lots of interesting harmonies and moody verses that lead into a bigger, more emotional chorus… Pete worked his magic on the piano and added in amazing touches to the overall mix (like a seal sound you can hear at the end of verse 2) and I loved adding the stacks of vocals onto the bridge section before it moves into a single voice that makes it feel like the singer is rolling through the turmoil of the sea all alone.

Tell us your best mood to create a song.
I don’t like to limit myself based on what mood I’m in. If I’m feeling mad or sad that can evoke a different song than if I’m feeling happy or hopeful. I think writing even when you are not “feeling it” tends to get you through the rough moments and usually produces something unexpectedly cool.

Tell us the names of artists or musicians you have worked with, in the past.
I love to collaborate so I write a lot with other artists and musicians. I can’t list every amazing human, but here’s a shortlist of people I’ve had the pleasure of writing with: Shannon Soderlund, Alex Helton, Mikey Meiers, Lauren Light, Dennis Coronel, Steve Vito, Riccardo Barletta, Joshua Seawell, Justin Chase, Lesley Barth, Emily Hulslander… just to name a few!

Tell us about your experience performing on stage for the first time or recording in the studio for the first time.
I was really little when I started performing with my family on stage. One time, at age four, I forgot the lyrics to my solo and my sister swooped right in to take over and save me! It was terrifying and I think has caused a deep fear of me forgetting lyrics on stage to this day! Ha-ha! As far as recording goes, I remember the very first session I had when I was six years old. My mom drove me up to Los Angeles for the day and I recorded vocals for a song called “Don’t Take The Color Out of Me” in a closet. It came naturally to me and I really felt from that moment that this was what I wanted to do when I grew up. I continued recording those kids’ songs for the next ten years until my voice became too mature to continue with kid’s albums.

Tell us how you approach songwriting.
It usually depends on the song and situation. I feel most comfortable writing melodies, so I have a lot of those on my phone to search through when looking for new ideas. I also jot down any lyrical ideas and interesting things I hear people say to come back to when songwriting. There are some songs I write completely with vocals and lyrics and record lots of lush harmonies as a demo and there are other songs I pick up my guitar or banjo and write from the start with chord progressions. Mixing it up also helps me get out of any writer’s block or mental limitations.

Tell us your opinion on blending genres or experimenting with sound.
I love blending genres when writing songs. I have an alt-pop duo called CH£X that has been really fun to blend my pop sensibilities with hip-hop and some darker, often funny lyrical themes and melodies. Alex Helton, CH£X’s other half and the producer of the project always adds his own flair to each song, too…so I love to see what comes out of the collaboration. I’ve also been experimenting with recording a bit on my own and usually what comes out of those sessions are really rough demos, but they allow me to get really creative with my vocal melodies (sometimes writing with an instrument can box me in).

Elaborate on what compels you to go into music.
I think music has always had a pull on me since it came naturally to me. Singing is something I love doing, but speaking publicly terrifies me so when I realized I had things to say, this was the best way to get those thoughts out there…because I’m really rather shy off stage.

Discuss how you record your vocals.
If I am at home, I usually will record 2 takes for each vocal – i.e. 2 verse tracks, 2 pre-choruses, 2 bridges, etc. and also do quads on the chorus vocals. I love harmonies, so I tend to go a little overboard when I’m recording those, especially at home since I will have more time to get them done. If I’m in a studio with an engineer, we usually record whatever way they are most comfortable with. Sometimes I will do full takes of the song to warm up, other times we will focus on sections of the song and just do those until we get the parts right.

Tell us the software you use mostly for recording.
I use Logic as my DAW and have been running my Shure SM7 mic through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 station. I also plug the mic into a Cloudlifter to really boost the gain on the SM7.

Elaborate on the song.
I hope this song reaches those that need it most. I wrote it while I was dealing with a bad bout of depression and I wanted to show people what it truly feels like when you are struggling with mental health. I hope people know they are not alone and that it will get better. They may get knocked down, but they will get back up again.

Elaborate on your artist’s name and the title of the album.
I chose to use my real name, Chelsey Coy, as my artist’s name since I love alliteration (I mean, who doesn’t?) but I also just think it’s a cool name. 🙂
