Tell us your real names, country of birth, and childhood experience.
I’m Alex Johnson, from Australia. “Coast & Ocean” is my rapper-songwriter name. I grew up by the lakeside on the southeast coast. I was always trying to write and be a hit songwriter. I would go to the beach, smoke ciggies, skate, and write tunes with friends. I was always a collaborative, creative, and super-strong songwriter.
Tell us your academic qualification.
I have no degree; I quit uni and started touring and playing in the cities for a living at 21. I’ve been living on the road making myself play shows for ages now. I’m 3 years deep living as a musician. Countless months on the road always catching buses, planes, and trains everywhere with my guitar and equipment.
Tell us about your music career, band name, musical background, experience, and skills.
I’m a solo artist with a lot of styles influencing me like hip hop, r&b, singer-songwriter, jazz, trap, blues, and soul. I like authenticity. “Coast & Ocean” has to me a sense of self and it’s cool. I toured in 2017 nonstop for 9 months straight – over Australia, Netherlands, Italy, Thailand, and Cambodia. I started in this industry professionally when I was 21. I have a song written since 14 years old. I’d always played in bands growing up, doing festivals and gigs in various projects. Check my website.
Tell us about your genre, concept, and idea behind your music video and the song.
I do RnB, hip-hop mixed with elements of everything. Folk, trap, whatever I vibe at the time. I got a ferry to Vlieland off the coast of the Netherlands to shoot the clip for my upcoming official video release for the track. The concept was this girl I’m chasing is just a mirage and isn’t really there. It’s a super rad clip. I was doing a lot of meds to keep me awake on stage. I felt like Lindsay Lohan, I was juggling an ex-girlfriend at the time and was never home to see her; it was hard I was working too much.
Tell us how you are promoting your music.
Touring constantly and collaborating with other artists is important. Also doing lots of live vids online and staying on top of your social media.
Tell us what makes you happy and what makes you sad.
I hate being stagnant and hanging around people who are uninspired; Christmas and birthdays alone overseas; touring alone all the time makes me sad.
I get happy when I’m with the homies and a show goes off and we party afterward or working on new stuff. I’m happy when I’m getting creative in the studio.
Explain clearly the story or concept behind the song.
I was on tour with Lyall Moloney before heading overseas and wrote the song in Sydney. I was low and feeling the comedown, I was on meds to help me stay awake and alive at shows, I felt like Lindsay Lohan, I was so busy and my dreams all were unfolding… my ex was calling me crying on the phone a lot and I was unhappy that I couldn’t love her the way she needed, I felt empty… possessive, but I had to let go so I guess that’s what I wrote Lindsay Lohan…

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew, or music video director, how the song was recorded, and how the music video was shot.
Coast & Ocean is a solo act rapper singer and the new single “Lindsay Lohan” is a production by Deli Pres. We recorded in his Bondi studio and smashed it out in a few hours, director Milda hit me with a concept for the clip and we went back and forwards on ideas. We got my friend Veerle who is the girl in the clip and co-director Sebastian who came and shot the clip. We shot for over 2 days in Vlieland, Netherlands on the beach and forest on the island.
Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience, and your future goal.
For 3 years I been touring and making a living from it. The longest tour to date is 9 months. My experience always varies. I’m always constantly cherishing moments of kindness by strangers that respect artists. I’m often sleep deprived, incredibly exhausted and when I get to a friend’s place I just met and I get looked after with accommodation and food I’m so appreciative. Future goals are to write a book, get No. 1 on the charts, and buy my mum a house.
Tell us what makes you unique from others.
I’m always pushing boundaries and bringing new flavors with my personality and linking with other unique creative artists to create great music. That’s why I stand out. Once you see me you can’t un-see it.
Tell us your weakness and strength pertaining to music.
My strength is my work ethic. Huge hustle. The biggest weakness is juggling creative work with business work, my stress and anxiety levels…
List your five favorite songs including the artists.
Frank Ocean – “Chanel”
Mac Miller – “Objects in the Mirror”
Junor – “Top Flight” ft Mann
Def Cab for Cutie – “Follow You Into the Dark”
Faboulous – “Into you”
Tell us your position on “DIY” Do It Yourself” and signing to a major label.
Doing it yourself is a main part of the hustle. Because if you don’t believe in yourself then you won’t ever see labels come knocking. I’m lucky to have a lot of people who believe in me around me helping.
Tell us the instruments put together in this song.
Guitar, vocals, keys, synths, bass, 808s electronic trap drums.
Tell us other activities you will like to pursue apart from music.
Session writing behind the scenes, collaborating with artists that need songs written. Also collaborating with fashion brands, modeling clothes, and designing environment-friendly clothes. Sell merchandise like lighters, T-shirts, and stuff I like with my brand on it.
Tell us about gaining the confidence to sing in front of a large crowd for the first time.
Using the nerves to propel you forward and trying to lose control in the moment is hard but rewarding. Letting go of insecurities. It’s adrenaline-rushing and crazy. The first large crowd I played to I was looking down at everyone; so nervous. But do it everywhere and practice makes perfect. Just put in the hours daily.
Tell us the best way to make money in the music business.
Playing covers in pubs 3-hour sets. Selling CDs and going out on tour constantly for months. Posters, social media promo, and getting good supports.
Tell us your experience pertaining to TV/Radio plugging.
I got played on Triple J a couple of times. TV-wise I’ve done a commercial and been filmed in competitions but didn’t make it on TV.
Narrate your recording experience.
I walk into the studio, I have a demo of it down before then we start putting the parts in. It’s a couple of hours of work. Then mixing and mastering. And it’s done. The most rewarding part is jumping in the booth once all the instruments are done and doing vocals.
