ARTIST NAME: Dan Shaw & Eden Michelle

Apple Music

South African artists Dan Shaw & Eden Michelle met in London after both immigrating concurrently in 2016.
Eden, classically trained since the age of 6, has been producing, writing, and composing for numerous singers and artists.
After resonating with Dan’s innovative sound and evocative vocals, Eden took on the project of producing Dan’s music, and that year together they co-wrote the records released for Dan’s debut EP “The Smoke” released in May 2017.
The power team toured the United States in early 2018, performing in multiple cities to Sold Out shows including a guest performance at SXSW 2018.
With a shared passion and correlative vision – the dynamic duo have joined forces in 2019 again to reconnect global generations of today with timeless sounds. By combining their talents, an audience can expect vast amounts of diversity in their live show.

Eden Michelle:
Elaborate on the storyline of this song.
‘Special’ was written with the intention of giving the listener a dissonant feeling.
I had heard Dan’s voice and after hearing the rich warm tone in her vocals, I picked up my electric guitar and started writing ‘Special.’
The story of the song is a concept of someone being your kind of special/perfect.
About having built up all these expectations of what you want in someone and finally finding it in the most unexpected place where nothing means anything anymore without them being around.
I think Dan interpreted the story and message incredibly beautifully with the song and I’m super proud to say that’s the first song we ever worked on together.

Dan Shaw:
Discuss your personality.
If I had to describe myself in two words I’d probably say that I’m an empathetic realist.
I am very passionate about life and I make a conscious effort to practice gratitude in everything I do.
I am a quick learner and I am not afraid to ask questions or say what’s on my mind.
I’d say that a weakness of mine is definitely impatience but it is something that I am aware of and progressively working on.
I respect the fact that everyone is on their own journey and that success is defined very differently by each and every one of us.
I love meeting new people, developing connections and relationships, and living vicariously through other people’s stories (it makes for great songwriting too).

Discuss your existence as a musician.
At the beginning of 2017, I had the privilege of co-writing and being involved in the production of my very first EP, The Smoke.
I have since been performing, collaborating, song-writing, and studying sound production.
I have new music coming out in the next month or so (also being produced and co-written with the extremely talented Eden Michelle).

Go into details on the changes in your life for choosing music as a career.
I have always had an incredibly deep appreciation and love for music and singing but growing my understanding as to what producing a record actually entails has superseded my expectations tenfold.
I have since begun studying for a three-year degree at The Sound & Audio Engineering Institute in the hopes of furthering my involvement in the music industry as an entity.
I am hungry to learn and this is certainly what I am most passionate about in life, it’s just taken me some time to believe in myself enough to do it.

Tell us the benefits and drawbacks of choosing music as a career.
For me personally, everything pertaining to the music industry and my choice of being involved with it has been smooth sailing thus far and I think as long as I trust my gut, it’ll always lead me in the right direction.

Tell us how you will manage fame as an established artist.
Fame is not a destination. I like to live in the present and take on each new encounter as it comes.
Being able to make and share music is a privilege and I will always see it as such.

Let us know the greatest moment of your music career.
Albeit doing a tour around The USA and playing at 8 sold-out Sofar Sounds Shows around the country including at SXSW…
I’d still have to say that my ‘greatest moment’ to date has to be the launch of my EP. It was my first ever stage performance, back home with an intimate audience of about 110 people (all friends and family) who all contributed towards making the album possible. That’s going to be a tough one to beat!

Discuss your moment of rejection as a musician/artist and how you are able to cope and move on with your career.
Eden and I have both been fortunate to achieve all of the goals we have set for ourselves in the short time frame we have been working together.
I have not necessarily put any limiting expectations on myself or others and I truly believe that everything happens for a reason…
Tell us the most negative comment you have ever received.
Honestly, I don’t hold onto anything ‘negative’ because I generally like to see the lesson in everything, especially constructive criticism. Eden and I both welcome it with warm arms.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.
My artist’s name is Dan Shaw. I have been called this since primary school and it always had a great ring to it.
State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.
The title of the album is ‘The Smoke’. We agreed on this name based on the fact that we had both been living in London at the time, all the songs had been written and produced in different locations in London and London has always been nicknamed the smoke town because of all the pollution in the city (mainly during the industrial revolution).
