Teesside newcomer Finn Forster certainly hit the ground running with his debut single Empty Promises in 2019. Finn has a wide range of pure grassroots experience through passion and pure work ethic, which began at the age of twelve playing alongside his immediate family in the Irish Folk Band The Shea Family.
May 2019 brought the perfect chance for Finn to showcase his potential with his first Radio airtime. Finn’s second single Circles quickly became a favorite anthem of his now growing army of local fans. Following a succession of features from North East Music Magazine Narc, NE Volume, and a front-page feature from Teesside Live, Finn played support for Upcoming Cheltenham Rock n Roll artist Laurie Wright, Scottish band Neon Waltz, and Ex Seahorses frontman Chris Helme. Finn released his debut EP ˜Lockdown B-sides on July 17th, 2020 as well as his latest single ˜Time in December 2020. The Teesside artist gained BBC track of the week twice from the releases. Finn produces and performs with a presence that continually leaves fans seeking more. With a large number of 2021 live dates in the pipeline, including a self-promoted hometown headline show at Eston and Normanby Social Club and Middlesbrough Town Hall debut, 2021 is looking to be the most promising yet. Releasing songs that are emotive and honest, hugely inspired by modern society and a personal perspective of a man whose message is to prove there are no limitations due to background or upbringing.

LYRICS

My reflections someone else
But he don’t look me in the eyes
I’ve been tryna be myself
But I don’t know him half the time
A hundred miles from where I’ve been
But a thousand more to where I go
Day’s seem dark unless that’s just me
I’ve stopped looking so I’ll never know

I’ve been counting stars without you
Seems lately I don’t know you
Still, I tell you I’m fine
Memories from photographs that I’ve seen
Still asking bout’ you lately
Ain’t got no peace of mind
Remnants of an empty broken heart
Searching for the things that seem too far

All the places where we’ve been
All those times stuck in my head
I couldn’t change them if I tried
I’d do it all again instead
A hundred miles from where I’ve been
But a thousand more to where I go
Days seem dark unless that’s just me
I stopped looking so I’ll never know

I’ve been counting stars without you
Seems lately I don’t know you
Still, I’d tell you I’m fine
Memories from photographs that I’ve seen
Still asking bout you lately
Ain’t got no peace of mind
Remnants of an empty broken
Searching for the things that seem too far

I’ve been counting stars without you
Seems lately I don’t know you
Still, I’d tell you I’m fine

Memories from photographs that I’ve seen
Still asking bout you lately
Ain’t got no peace of mind
Remnants of an empty broken
Searching for the things that seem too far

Discuss the concept of mixing genres together.
I guess you could say I have both consciously and subconsciously ended up writing, producing, and releasing Indie Folk Pop records. My voice, naturally with no effort in regards to the overall sound of it has always swayed towards that of pop vocals. Pair that with the fact I had a huge folk-influenced upbringing, you end up with what you hear right now when you listen to ‘Remnants.’

Elaborate on your childhood background.
So about that huge folk upbringing eh? Well, I always have, and always will be incredibly grateful for the fact I grew up from as I can remember, surrounded by music. Several members of my immediate family are in a Family Band that covers Irish Folk Music. I was in and around their rehearsals from childhood so it felt incredibly natural to pick up a guitar and eventually join them for some gigs on the local folk scene in my Home Town. The band consists of my Grandfather, Great Uncle, Mother, Auntie, Uncle, and Second Cousin.

Discuss your music life.
Right now, I’m feeling more aware and sure of what it is I’m trying to achieve and give as an artist. I started my journey as a solo artist on February 19 but I’d been in and out of bands for years, shaping, experiencing, and learning. I wouldn’t change any of it, as it’s all led to who I am now. I’m at the point of being an independent artist with absolute minimal industry backing where I’m confident in exploring my creative range and building the best possible relationship with fans. For me every day I’m just looking to add building blocks to these metaphorical stairs I’m venturing up on my journey… I’ve never been more excited in the present before. It’s so good to see the positive reaction and response from both fans and the industry, as I personally know just how much more I have to offer.

Elaborate on your recording experience in the studio.
‘Remnants’ was the first record I have released to date that was recorded inside an actual studio with live drums, that’s crazy to think…Having now heard ‘Remnants’ and how it turned out, I think I’ll always be taking the same approach now for sure… especially for components like drums.

Discuss the songwriting process of this song.
In all honesty, I write a lot better under the pressure of having to produce something quickly. I had another song in mind for studio time I had booked out weeks in advance but realized in typical fashion the night before it wasn’t going to work or wasn’t right. I sat with my lead guitarist, Billy Smith, and reeled off ‘Remnants’ in less than twenty minutes. I had the verse ideas for a while but finished that song there and then the night before. Probably motivated by the fact I didn’t want to show up to the studio without something. To now see the track completely finished and looking back at how quick the writing process was…

Tell us what is special about the song that can hook a listener.
The song has a beautiful live string arrangement that ties in perfectly to the honest and incredibly relatable lyrics.

Discuss what you consider in a hit song.
For me, a hit song has to give people that rare indescribable feeling of ‘when you know… you know”. Of course, I’m never going to like all hit songs, but the hit that I have considered a hit song and an amazing one at that, always has to really make me feel some type of way, there is no other way around it.

Tell us your opinion on melody.
Melody is literally the most important component of a song for me; it’s what lingers in your mind after listening. The difference in me wanting to release a song and even finishing it will always be whether or not I believe in the melody or not as something people would really love.

Elaborate on what you are doing to develop your music career.
Lockdown 1 changed everything for me, something flicked in my head and I became a completely different artist in the best possible way. I’ve not looked back since. For me above the rest of the many things I pursue and keep on top of on a daily basis, is building the best possible relationship with fans of my music. I do that by trying my absolute best to interact, online and in day to life, release good quality content consistently and above all else, tell a story.

List your greatest supporters.
I’m lucky to have had a lot of family and friends who had supported and stood by me since day 1. It’s, fortunately, moving into the point where it’s much more than just family now and it’s the most exciting thing in the world for me. I equally owe everything to everyone who supports me. It’s incredibly tough as an independent artist so many would tell you, but it’s the amazing response and stories of how my music has connected with people that keep me going more than I think anyone would ever know.

Compare a music career to a non-music career.
I’ve certainly experienced growing up both individually and simultaneously. Both have pro’s and con’s but for me, music is the only thing to make me feel euphoric and alive more than anything else in life. It is and always will be unmatched for me.

Discuss your music background.
As well as surrounded by my family’s Irish Folk Band, I was introduced to a lot of Brit Pop growing up, mostly from my Dad in car journeys. I remember watching Oasis for the first time on MTV and thinking it was the coolest thing in the world.

State your future goals.
To really take things to the next level, writing, releasing, and performing more than ever with the overall goal of impacting people in the best possible way.

Discuss what has changed in the music business.
I feel the downside of having such a wide range of online and digital entertainment today, sucks the authenticity out of music. Everything from how easy it is to access to how many people can latch onto something so meaningless is a little heartbreaking. However, and for me, they will always be, ‘however, it’s now easier and more convenient for independent artists to truly take off more than ever before. It’s never been more true to say, you get out what you put in, I’ve proved it to myself so many times as well as seeing it with other artists so often.

Tell us the most important tools for an artist.
Social media, their persona, and their music… No argument for me.

Elaborate on the song.
It’s been a mad time over the last year and a half. For the whole world, I guess I put a lot of emotion into ‘Remnants’ that I subconsciously picked up over that time. It’s a bitter-sweet tune that touches on how heartbreaking it is in times when we reminisce on life realizing that among the new amazing things we might now have as well achieved, there’s so much that is left behind in the process. Be it places, experiences, loved ones, or relationships. While writing ‘Remnants’ I had a combination of all in mind.

Elaborate on your artist’s name and the title of the album.
What may come as a total shock to some, but obvious to others is my full name being Luke Antony Finn-Forster. I combined my double-barreled last name to create my artist’s name. A suggestion by my Head of Acting at Drama School, one that I loved and stuck with since…
