ARTIST NAME: flo.wav
SONG TITLE: Shift
ALBUM TITLE: Textures
RELEASE DATE: 1/11/19
GENRE: Hip Hop/Rock/Pop
Since the 2017 release of MIXTURES, flo.wav has been lighting stages on fire and curating two music and arts festivals, all while recording music.
Self-produced in three separate studios, TEXTURES is flo.wav’s upcoming sophomore EP thematically focusing on self-expression, individual freedoms and importantly having fun.
Teaming up with Bad Cloud Media for the music video, flo.wav dropped Shift, the first single off the awaited EP celebrating the dawn of 2019.
With five songs in total, the duo hybridizes punchy drums and guitar-laced sections with boomy 808s, synth pads, and live Foley inspired by old filmmakers. Layered in “beat sauce,” the subtle ingredients meant to be felt, flo.wav cooks up a sonically unique aura to nourish your ever-growing ears. Do you feel it?
Tell us your names, country of birth, and childhood experience.
Conor Bertha and Dylan Parra, United States, and Conor was born in Florida while Dylan was born in Chicago.
Tell us your academic qualification.
High School Graduates.
Elaborate on your music career, band name, experience, and skills.
Conor played drums for a few Pop Punk bands and rapped for fun in high school.
Dylan played drums for metal/progressive rock bands in high school.
Conor filled in on bass for one of Dylan’s bands and they have been creating music together since.
Dylan sent Conor some beats right after they graduated and with those beats, along with Dylan’s vocals and added production from Conor, flo.wav was born.
Both artists are multi-instrumentalists and handy with a DAW. ‘Shift’ is self-mixed by the duo.
Tell us your genre and idea behind your music video or song.
We don’t really fit into a current genre, but we have a more Hip Hop vibe with a lot of rock elements added.
Live drums, guitars, synths, singing, rapping, 808s, and modern production all blended together.
Tell us how to run a record label based on your experience as an artist.
Run it for the love of music. Don’t exploit artists. Trust the artists’ creativity.
Tell us how you are promoting your music.
Face-to-face marketing, shows, mini-tours, Facebook / Instagram ads, social media, Reddit, submitting to blogs, and we created our own music festival in our town to gain more support for local bands in our area.
Explain the story behind the song.
Every day we see the masses following each other, but then we see the creatives thinking for themselves.
This song is motivation to continue free thought and be yourself, even if it feels like you’re swimming upstream.
State the names of other members of your band, music producer, crew, or music video director.
flo.wav is Conor Bertha and Dylan Parra. We sent Shift to Josh Cobb at Rockbot Studios for the Mastering. Music video shot by Jason Blankenship at Bad Cloud Media. Stage musicians include Juan Mallorca and Marcus Celentano.
Elaborate on the song and music video.
The song and music video share a common theme – Perseverance and being yourself.
The girl still chases her artistic passions even though her boyfriend is holding her back.
The little kid still practices baseball even though he gets bullied.
We still follow our dreams despite all the hardships being an artist entails.
Tell us how long you have been in the music business, your experience, and your future goal.
Both of us have been playing in bands since middle school. flo.wav debuted in 2017 and has been gaining steady traction ever since.
We’ve learned a lot about what moves to make in this industry. It’s a chess game for sure. Our goal is to reach as many people as possible and be able to create music every day instead of working a 9-5.
Tell us what makes you unique from others.
Our sound is unlike any other band. We take from our Rock upbringing and put it into this Hip Hop feel. It’s hard to compare us to other artists because we are just different.
Tell us your weakness and strength pertaining to music.
There’s always room for growth. Until we are the best in the world at our craft there will be weaknesses.
However, both of us are naturally musically inclined and are very good at identifying small but important aspects needed to make great music.
List your five favorite artists.
Our five favorite artists right now would be Mutemath, Linkin Park, Mac Miller, J. Cole, and Anderson .paak.
Tell us your position on “Do It Yourself” and signing to a major label.
We are all for DIY. All the Major Label horror stories are a turn-off, however, we would consider a deal if the deal was right!
Tell us other activities you are pursuing apart from music.
Conor is a father and a husband, and when not doing music he surfs when the waves are good.
Dylan does freelance graphic design and DJs on the side.
Music is both of our main passions.
