SONG TITLE: MAD.
RELEASE DATE: JULY 5th, 2019
GENRE: Hip Hop/Rap
State your history.
My name is GR3YWXLF, a supervillain and humble meme curator from West London. Originally Jamaican-born, I’ve been dabbling with cartoons, poetry, comics, and music for most of my life.
I initially started out producing little bits and pieces here and there – old Kanye-styled sampling (nothing too groundbreaking)…transitioning to writing raps and perfecting flows.
Describe yourself as an artist.
Tell us the genre of your music.
I’d say my genre of music is an amalgamation of genres – specifically lo-fi, hip hop, and R&B. With some alternative elements sprinkled in for good measure. I’m a big fan of experimenting with sounds so I find myself floating between multiple lines and would say I’m somewhat niche with it.
Tell us the story behind your song.
“MAD.” was inspired by an argument I had with someone who was really dialed up in his feelings – Real salty-like aggression. Instead of allowing myself to be caught up by how tedious the exchange was, I took that and used it as a springboard to flex some ego and stunt a little bit for this vibe. I also wanted to create something catchy, so here we are.
Tell us the problems you are facing as an artist.
Right now, my only problem is adequate exposure as an independent. While it’s somewhat “easier” to do it alone nowadays, the dynamics of everything has changed a great deal with social media, etc. There is always something new to learn, something more I need to do. It’s forever a learning curve.
Discuss the recording and production of the song.
The beat was created by a dope producer from Rotterdam by the name of AJSOUNDS. Stylistically it sounded different, which immediately caught my attention, and with a little Whisky on deck, I knew I had to cook up something slick.
List the names of blogs, radio, or television stations that have supported you so far.
Blogs wise, so far I’ve had support from, Buzz Music, DOPECAUSEWESAID, A&R Factory, Xune Mag, Xttrawave, UndergroundHipHop Blog, ItsHipHop, IndieHipHop.
Brief us on what inspires you to make music.
I just like to create stuff. For the most part, inspiration can be fuelled by a variety of things at any given time. Sometimes I hear a beat and immediately get an idea I want to write, or I’m watching Rick and Morty and I catch an abstract topic to paint.
Tell the piece of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.
Just have fun with it! Don’t be too consumed by the numbers and own your vibe. It’s easier said than done I know, especially in an age where it seems you don’t have to necessarily be talented to get far (no shade but we all know it’s true). However, I feel people ultimately connect with realness, eventually. So just be real…
Name your favorite artists for collaboration.
There are so many fire artists out there I could be listing and wishing for days, I’d love to collaborate with EarthGang. Saba would be dope. Also Frank Ocean or Kali Uchis, I feel like it would be some real mellow ambiance.
Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.
I’d be really boring at first, buy some new comics, a wings franchise, and probably do some investments. Then I’d spend some money on a private island so I could build the ultimate base of operations, like the ‘Batcave’ and stuff but for ‘Supervillainy’ inventing random technology.
Discuss music promotion and how you are boosting your fan base.
Right now I’m just trying to stay consistent and release as much as I can, and trying to be more active on social media. I haven’t got a team or anything like that so everything I do is firmly grounded in me focusing my energy. Promotion is a tricky thing but talking to and being featured by outlets do help to bridge the gap between me and potential listeners.
Tell us how you manage other activities with your music career.
I’m still trying to figure out the right balance with this. There are weeks where all I do is music, watching tutorials on how to do things, and not much else. No friends, no partying. I’m still trying to fine-tune my time and energy…
State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.
My name is GR3YWXLF, a new age supervillain. It’s basically grey wolf but spelled ultra-fancier. Like 6LACK is actually “Black”. If you didn’t understand before, you should know – Mind is blown right.
State the title of the song and the meaning.
“MAD.”- A song about never apologizing for your energies. Naysayers will always be salty like a sea breeze, but don’t let them water down your flavor.
