ARTIST NAME: HENRIKES
SONG TITLE: Stockholm
RELEASE DATE: 8th of March
GENRE: Electronic Downtempo/Indie/ Alt-pop/Dreampop
HENRIKES grew up in Stockholm, Sweden. She was classically trained vocally, before studying at a more contemporary music school in London.
Inspired by artists such as Lykke Li, Lana Del Rey, Anna Of The North, and film composers such as Hans Zimmer and Javier Navarrete, she began creating her own melodic and filmic arrangements with electronic pop elements.
During her time in London, she started collaborating with other writers, which eventually led to the release of the single Happy in 2018 with Cosmos Music.
Together with the same songwriters as Happy (Märta Grauers and Maria Marcus), Stockholm was born and is to be released on International Women’s Day.
Go into detail on why you decided to choose music as a career.
It has just been a natural evolvement, one step leading to the next.
When I was little I used to forget to eat sometimes because I was sitting somewhere thinking of a new melody or story.
It seems like that part of me has just kept going, or I have found an outlet for it and I’ve kept creating, which has opened doors and led me to where I am today.
Brief us the feedback you are getting from fans on your music.
My favorite one is that it doesn’t sound exactly like something else; it has its own personality and conveys emotion.
Discuss the relevance of social networking to music.
Social networking in terms of working with others has been very important to me as it has really inspired me, challenged me, and developed me.
In terms of getting your music out, it’s of key relevance, especially if you’re trying to do your own thing – getting other people on board that understand your ideas, whether it’s collaborators or followers.
Tell us how you record your song.
This song was recorded in Cosmos studio in Stockholm.
Märta started playing this guitar riff, Maria added some chords on the piano and I sang on top of that.
It was recorded in two days I think. We all discussed the lyrics a lot, it was important to make the words flow right, visually describe Stockholm, and at the same time weave in these metaphors that I had in mind.
Tell us the story behind the song.
There are so many levels to relate to this song, which is why I love it so much.
The song is about my hometown Stockholm, narrated in a metaphorical way.
It’s about the complicated love to someone who is not happy here in Stockholm, longing away from heavy darkness in the winters.
Then there is this other side, sort of defending this place and emphasizing the high hopes when the light comes back in spring.
Having lived abroad, and coming home with new perspectives I sometimes felt frustrated, and so I have to also remind myself of the things that can be taken for granted here.
State your musical skills.
I am a recording artist. I write songs, mainly on the piano and I am a singer.
My skills are in my ears, my mind, and my voice. Sometimes I make arrangements for other songs, such as with Blackbird by the Beatles.
Tell us how long it takes to complete a song from the start. Wow, so different depending on the song.
Everything from a week to months but that has mainly got to do with the creative process, so perhaps leaving an idea for some time to then revisiting it and finishing it later with fresh eyes/ears.
Go into detail on how you develop your lyrics and melody.
This is a good question because I don’t really know. And that’s what I love most about this I think, there are no rules and each song is different.
I would say I often begin with melodies, but not always.
Sometimes I begin with lyrics, which I often spontaneously write on my phone on the metro.
If I play some chords or a sound/atmosphere I often get associations in my mind, and sometimes melody and words come out at the same time and it’s like “oh, that was the chorus”. That’s exactly what happened on “I’m leaving but I’m feeling happy”.
