Discuss your music life.
My love for music started out with trying and failing to play multiple instruments; I tried piano so hard to remember keys, I attempted to learn the guitar couldn’t get the placement of my hands right. But the drum was a success story. My uncle knows how to make African drums, I had one when I was younger and that help me transferred to the classic drum set. Now what got me to start rapping is a whole different story, as I owe that to Mrs. Garcia (English class for introducing me to poetry). I wouldn’t be rapping if that part of class never happened.
Discuss the recording of this song.
I was so excited to get in the booth to record this song. Not only because it’s a part of the process of finally starting the new album. But this rough year we had with the pandemic; we are finally starting to open back up just in time for summer and I felt “Going Up” was perfect to usher it in.
Discuss the lyrics of this song.
“Potential is beaming had to claim what was mine outta my character had to get back in line” – this was the opening verse because I felt like I had to remind myself to get rid of the green eye and quit looking at what everyone else is doing. I have my own success and my story may be slower than my peers but my music speaks for itself.
Discuss the melody of the song.
The melody is really captivating and the guitar riffs throughout the song automatically catch your attention and set you up for that beat drop. I chose this melody out of the plethora of beats I went through because I recently watched a video of Kanye West during his process of making the ‘Graduation’ album; he was working on the single ‘Stronger’ and made that beat because he wanted to prepare himself when he started performing in the stadium; he wanted his production to hit hard. I took that inspiration in mind when creating ‘Going Up’ because when I do reach that status I want to have a production that can fill up a stadium.
Explain your songwriting process.
Since the beginning, I can’t write if I don’t feel inspired and I don’t like what comes out when I try to force the feeling; this can sometimes take weeks or months. My little trick that usually works is watching freestyles on YouTube and that usually gets me in the mood to rap.
Tell us what makes this song unique.
I feel it’s the very thing that I sometimes struggle with which is my voice. Once I started using my cadence as an instrument I feel I bring uniqueness to my music that none else can.
Tell us how you develop your sound.
I also develop my sound from one of my biggest inspirations J Cole. I studied Friday Night Lights Mixtape religiously, I love the honestly he put into that body of work from that day on I knew I wanted to be that honest in my music.
Discuss your music background.
I got a couple of musicians in my family. My aunt is a singer and I also have an uncle who is a guitarist.
Tell us the factors you consider in a good song.
I think we all focus on the beat before anything so if that beat is 10 out of 10 you could get away with murder on a song, Also if you have any quotable lyrics that can be used as an Instagram caption that’s a big plus that will work in your favor.
Elaborate on your fan base.
My fan base is spread out and I’m really focusing on bringing them together this year. If I had to gather 50 of my fans right now I wouldn’t be able to do it because they are all spread out. I’m really focusing on building the die-hard fan base that’s going ride with me through whatever.
Discuss your future goals.
I want to grow stronger as an artist. I have been going to the studio for some years now and I still get nervous once my engineer puts the mic on. Because I know how long it took to get here. I put all the pressure on my shoulders to leave the studio with something to be proud of. I’m a really hard critic of myself. I’m learning how to appreciate my own work.
Mention those that have supported you so far.
Realoldheadz is a music review channel that had shown me a lot of support and seen my growth between my different tapes.
Tell us if you are interested in collaborating with other musical artists.
I would love to collaborate with any artist I like.
Elaborate on the song.
‘Going Up’ is a song I made to acknowledge my work. We need to stop searching for validation from people who are never going to give it to us.
Elaborate on your artist’s name and the title of the album.
IV Collin is play off of my real name Albert Collin Williams IV, quick and short, but it holds a lot of weight to me.
