Tell us how you develop your sound and style to make it different from other musicians.
When I write a song I cannot think … oh, now I will create something really different because I’m busier to create something really honest. I’m pretentious melodically, so I assume that if the song is entertaining me musically it will be also entertaining for others as well.
Tell us your opinion on the way new artists are coming up and the frequent release of songs.
I’m not really long enough in the music field to have an overall view and build up an adequate opinion, because I have been too busy with the context of contemporary art and my performances in the last 15 years. Making songs and touring is something I do the last 3 years only. I suppose fast-food music is necessary, in order to fill up some empty space people have around themselves while doing or thinking about something else.
A good deep song does not really allow you to be busy with something else. A good song is a prison. It locks you in, occupies your body and mind completely and you become unable to do anything else. That’s why we need music which just feels the air… nothing else. And there are enough many people who are totally capable to fulfil this easy task.
Tell us your experience as a musician.
I have never look at myself as a professional musician. Music has been always only one of my tools for making performances. Just one of the elements. Maybe the one that gives me the most pleasure of exploring it, but I never look at it as the most important one. For many years I didn’t dare to enter the song-making context because I was not sure that I can give something special, that I can have my own voice. It took a lot of concerts and approval from the audience that what I do is unique until I fully accepted it and became more confident. These days are hard to take me off stage.
Tell us your opinion on streaming and digital download of songs.
I think it’s what it is. But we can’t really fight evolution. It becomes more and more difficult to stand out as a musician; which I think is a great challenge for all of us.
Tell us how you see yourself in the coming time as a musician.
I suppose I’m going to write many more songs because that’s what I really love doing. I will not give up my work as a contemporary performer and a choreographer but I will definitely dedicate most of my time to getting better as a songwriter and vocalist.
Tell us five current artists that are your favorite presently.
Bjork, James Blake, Rihanna, Selena Gomez, Arca.
Tell us your best song up to date and share the link.
“I Can Not” is still my favorite: Spotify.
Tell us your dream and hope for the future.
In the next 20 years, I want to have 4 concerts a week and become so good that it becomes unbearable. I want to cure people’s hearts with my songs. That’s all.
Tell us what you think has changed in the music industry.
I’m not really still part of that industry so I really can’t form an adequate opinion. I make music for myself and my audience. There is nothing industrial about that… yet.
Tell us your opinion on TV and radio stations playing the same songs from established artists mostly and giving little chances to independent artists.
That’s a bitter one, but I suppose it has been like that since the beginning. When art becomes business; the rules and regulations become very unnatural and the evolution gets stuck…. but we should not give up making good songs, because even if they are not played on the radio, they will stay. You can’t kill a good song.
Tell us the challenges you think independent artists are facing and how they can be tackled.
Challenges are always welcome. That’s the beauty of being independent. It’s never boring.
Tell us your opinion on how corruption is affecting society and how it can be eradicated.
Nobody ever tried to corrupt me; which is a pity… because I would have a better understanding of that phenomenon.
State the links to your social media and stores.
Tell us what you think about using social media to promote music online.
If there were no YouTube and Facebook; I would probably not exist as an artist and a musician.
Tell us how you start as a musician.
My real start as a musician I suppose is when the kids around the block when I was 8 years old were asking me to sing for them songs and when I was doing it some of them were crying.
Tell us what still motivates you to go on with your music career.
There is something so pure and out of the earth in being inside the music that I suppose it makes you feel addicted. Music is a safe place even when it’s challenging and impossible.
Tell us about you as a person.
Oh gosh, I don’t know if I’m a person though. I know I have a body, which needs food and sex. I know I have a mind that needs diversity and lots of art and I know that I have a heart that needs to connect with others, and I think that music is my best way to connect.
Elaborate on the story behind the song.
Love is ridiculous, the whole drama and everything do not make much sense, but we still hang on to that, it’s a weird cult we all practice more or less. Sometimes all we need is a stupid love song. It’s pathetic but it’s true. And this naivety is beautiful in a way.
Tell us the process involved in making this song.
I wrote it at home in Bulgaria. First I wrote the music and the vocals and I had that for months just playing it regularly with no text. As more as I was playing and singing the melody, I was getting more and more convinced that it’s a really beautiful song and I must write the lyrics. One morning I just said to myself…. “you sit on the piano and you won’t get up until you are done with the lyrics”. Few days after I sang it live at a concert and everybody loved it.
List the people that deserved to be given credits for the making of the song.
I wrote the music and the lyrics and there is no special arrangement so I can only congratulate myself.
Tell us how you get funds to run your music career.
I get funds to run my music with the money I earn in contemporary art. Strange but it’s true.
Tell us the genre of your music and the reason you decided to go for this genre.
It’s theatrical, it’s dramatic, it’s emotional, and it’s old fashion. It’s me. There is no conscious decision involved.
Tell us if you prefer to write your own songs or you prefer to write with professional songwriters.
I definitely prefer to write the songs myself. It’s so much fun to pull out melodies of my heart.
Tell us if you prefer to produce your songs or you prefer to work with reputable producers.
I only can play my songs on a piano and I have no music production knowledge, so I prefer if someone is doing it and love to be surprised.
