Discuss your personality.
I’m really laid back and mellow. But I love a good joke.
Discuss your existence as a musician.
I want my music to be more than music. I want it to be a message, and to be a movement.
Go into details on the changes in your life for choosing music as a career.
It’s been a challenge, but also the most rewarding thing I’ve done. My confidence in myself has reached places I never thought it could. I am able to use my creativity for something and make my story mean something.
Tell us the benefits and drawbacks of choosing music as a career.
The biggest benefit is just using my voice and platform for something greater than me. I can use my life, my story, to make someone smile, or cry, or laugh, or think and being able to evoke an emotion. The biggest drawback is to understand it’s not all going to come together in a day. It’s a grind, some days more than others.
Tell us how you will manage fame as an established artist.
I’ll manage it simply by being exactly who I am right now. Anyone who lets fame go to his/her head gets complacent at some point. I can’t have that.
Elaborate on the storyline of this song.
It came from a place that took me years to reach. I’d been hurting for a while – depression running rampant. But eventually, I started to feel better. I realized I just needed to hold on and trust that things would get better. And it all came together once Black Panther came out. The chorus is based on that.
Let us know the greatest moment of your music career.
The greatest moment for me so far has been being asked back for the final round of the Next Up Concert Series in Inglewood, CA.

Discuss your experience pertaining to live performances, gigs, shows, and tours.
So far I’ve performed at the Next Up Concert Series in June and November 2018 and performed a set at The Airliner in Los Angeles in December of 2018. I do hope to tour at some point in the near future.
Discuss the changes in your life as an artist.
I’ve had to learn how to promote myself and my music, whereas my life before music was nothing like that.
State the names of the most important people that boosted your music career and how you met them.
Derek Russell, Kelvin Bellamy, and Johnnie Jameson. Derek and Kelvin hosted the concert series and trusted me to perform twice when nobody had any idea who I was. And Johnnie Jameson was the first to interview me and be part of my musical journey and has opened the door to me many times.
Explain what you have in mind before considering music as a career.
I didn’t know what I wanted to do, aside from music; I just know I wanted to make a difference.
Discuss your experience in life.
I’m a minister; I was long before the music. Spent a year at UCLA, would love to go back someday. But ministry and music have been my life, for life.
Name the artists that have influenced the world.
I’d say, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Prince, Elvis, The Beatles, N.W.A, 2pac, Notorious B.I.G, Kendrick Lamar, and any other artists that can help the world view art and themselves differently.
Discuss your moment of rejection as a musician/artist and how you are able to cope and move on with your career.
The biggest rejection I’ve felt has just been in ticket sales, not reaching the thresholds I feel I should. Not always seeing the support I did before making music my career. That and submitting music to labels, sites, DJs, and having them rejected. I cope with this by reminding myself that all I need is the right door to open one time, for my life to change.
Tell us the most negative comment you have ever received.
That there was nothing special about my voice and my vocals were generic.
Elaborate on the song.
Stand Still is just my message to the world, to just stand still and let God work things out for you. That’s been the way I’ve lived my life for as long as I can remember. Even when things get rough, stand still, it’ll turn around.
State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.
My name’s J. Jamal, which is an abbreviation for Just Jamal. Literally meaning, I’m just one guy with one mic, trying to reach many people.
State the title of the song and the meaning.
The song is Stand Still, meaning just breathe, relax, and trust God to turn things around for you.
State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.
The project is called iLikeMe. I chose this for the title because I consider my life … this was a journey. Some ups, some downs, great days, sleepless nights. But the lesson that I had to learn throughout it all was to always like me.
