ARTIST NAME: Keanu Reefs
SONG TITLE: Back to Dawn
ALBUM TITLE: New Era
RELEASE DATE: 8/5/19
GENRE: Indie Pop/Funk
Keanu Reefs is a brand new two-man band based out of Deerfield, Illinois, changing up the music scene by fusing funk, rock, pop, rap, and others to create new and innovative music.
While the two of us had been making music together since early high school, we felt that our material just wasn’t at the standard that we hold ourselves to, and thus began Keanu Reefs.
Now we work to not only create new and enjoyable music but tracks that are truly unique and catered to today’s incredible ever-changing world of music.
State your reason for choosing music as a career.
Frankly, for us, as cliché as it may sound, music is simply our passion. We’ve found that no matter what stage of life we are in, whether it is one of the greatest times or one of the lowest lows, we naturally gravitate back to music because it’s what truly makes us happy.
The mere thought of truly making it as an artist and being able to wake up each morning knowing that the workday would consist of creating music paints a bright smile on our faces. Beyond this, both of us have experienced genuine hardships in the past and found that despite the failures and successes of therapy and medicines, that communicating our emotions through music was the true cure. To put it simply; nothing makes us happier than good music.
Tell us how you write the lyrics to your song.
We begin by creating an instrumental in the studio – messing around with a variety of samples, riffs, beats, and a multitude of other tools. Once we’ve established a baseline for the instrumental, we find a new nature spot each time. For instance, we may go to a beach at night for one song, or nature preservation early morning for another. It all depends on the mood of the song, and it truly helps us to find inspiration, removing us from our homes and putting ourselves into new and interesting environments where our thoughts can flow freely.
Share the feedback you are getting from fans.
The only release we have done was on SoundCloud, but this being said, we have received incredible reviews. Beyond listening to and liking the track, a plethora of individuals reached out to us not only to compliment the song, its production, guitar, vocals, etc. This has been absolutely thrilling for us and makes us so happy that people are enjoying listening to our music as much as we enjoy making it.
Discuss your life outside the music world.
There are two of us in the band and we live very different lives! Julian goes to school at Syracuse University in New York, where he studies film and media production. He loves the outdoors, and just being goofy with friends. He’s got a very interesting dynamic to his character, almost embodying a stereotypical San Francisco resident yet has been raised entirely in Chicago.
Noah alternatively goes to school at Northeastern University in Boston. Studying marketing, he has found himself working with a number of companies doing graphic work and such. Noah absolutely loves to both play and watch basketball, in addition to creating memes in his free time.
Discuss your music career.
Our music career is essentially just starting! While Julian and I met in high school and created a few songs back then, they were not particularly high quality and it was very much a side project for us. Getting back from college and realizing we had the potential to make new, incredible music, we created an actual artist profile (Keanu Reefs), and began making music every night! Already in just a few short weeks we’ve seen great success and are beyond excited to see where this all goes.
Elaborate on your artist’s name.
Keanu Reeves is not only a very popular household name but more importantly an internet legend. Furthermore, Keanu is a genuinely good guy, which is hard to find, especially among celebrities these days. As we enjoy cannabis and it helps us to create our music, we created a pun using “Reefs” instead of “Reeves”
List your five favorite music videos with reasons.
L$D – A$AP Rocky – This video is absolutely incredible. From interesting visuals to tons of colors and angles, this video covers everything. Especially the effects applied were almost mind-blowing and make it almost impossible to look away.
Humble – Kendrick Lamar – My favorite music video of Kendrick’s, this just uses such odd and interesting imagery to convey double entendres that it really stands out as a piece of art.
Paradise – Coldplay – The weird but amazing elephant used throughout the video makes it not only enticing but a must-watch for everyone. Without seeming cringe in any manner, they created a music video that is somewhere between a masterful production and a meme.
New Light – John Mayer – If this had been truly produced, it would have been number one…John Mayer’s production team was actually having a big fight about the budget for this music video, so John Mayer naturally left, went to a local $300 green screen video store, and made this – A brilliant move in terms of both marketing and cost-effectiveness.
I Gotta Feeling – Black Eyed Peas – A legendary music video, this one simply brings us back to our past and we can see how music videos have evolved.
Tell us your source of inspiration.
Our sources of inspiration come from all over! As we don’t typically write direct lyrics detailing stories or imagery, we focus more on the meaning behind the words in a poetic sort of sense. Thus our inspiration comes from experiences in our lives, whether they are our happiest or saddest times. We’ve found that any extremes of emotion are the best lyrics we get, even if we have to push through sometimes to get them out.
Discuss your experience in dealing with fans.
We’re brand new to this, and it’s been so much fun thus far! When people reach out directly, we always make sure to respond, and not just something generic. We can’t even begin to express our gratitude for these listeners, and as a result, we feel it’s our duty to read their messages and respond properly!
Elaborate on the recording of this song.
This song was actually recorded in Julian’s basement! We utilized Logic Pro with a number of guitar effects overlaid by synths and software instruments. Using a nice microphone and some foam studio padding, we then recorded the vocals after having written them at the beach.
Elaborate on your future projects.
As aforementioned, we’re brand new to the game, and thus have a multitude of ideas for future projects. Once back at school, we will absolutely continue to make music and work on another album. In the meantime, we will release our first album, “New Era” on Monday, August 5th at 7:00 pm!
List the names of those that have supported you so far.
Our primary supporters have been:
Tell us your point of view on vocal tuning.
We think it’s something that can be used for a lot of good things and a lot of bad as well. There are artists out there that don’t truly have the vocals to be making what they are and use vocal tuning to make it sound as though they do, which we’re not fans of. That being said, its application in fields such as hip hop can be incredible, and we don’t see any problem with using vocal tuning to fix minor pitch issues.
Tell us your thoughts on quality and quantity for the release of songs.
Quality is greater than quantity always. While it’s obviously important to keep putting out music, it won’t matter to you or your fans if it’s not quality. What’s important is prioritizing ensuring your music is the best it can possibly be, even if that takes a huge amount of time and effort.
Tell us your viewpoint on comparing a music career to a non-music career.
Both of us feel similarly that a non-music career is plausible, but not something that would make us genuinely happy to go to work every day. The beauty to us of the music industry is not only what we get to do, but the dynamic, changing environment we’d get to work in and the incredibly talented individuals we’d meet.
Tell us your opinion on categorizing music into genres and sub-genres.
As an artist who is focusing specifically on fusing genres and making new ones, this is an interesting question. While we do think genres are helpful for organizing music, we wish there were more out there, and that you could be given the option to have fusions or custom names when uploading music.
State the genre you despise most with reason.
The only genre we don’t listen to at all is death metal. We recognize that the musicians are very talented and put in a lot of work, but for us, it’s hard to enjoy someone screaming bloody murder over guitar rather than singing or rapping.
List your five favorite movies with reasons.
Wolf of Wall Street – This film simply has everything you could ask for…The best actors in the world, massive amounts of money being spent on extreme luxury items, beautiful women, music, and parties – Especially managing to create this dynamic while maintaining a very impressive plotline blows us away every time we watch.
The Blind Side – The blind side was just a beautiful movie. Beyond the incredible story and hardships displayed, the ways the family reacted and how the film followed his career were phenomenal.
Borat – In our opinions, easily one of, if not THE funniest movie of all time. Sasha Baron Cohen is just such a comedic genius, from his organized skits to his random public pranks; it’s a nice stress reliever for us.
Interstellar – What a masterpiece of a film right here…The plot, the scenery, but especially the music. Enlisting musical genius Hans Zimmer was absolutely brilliant and has made this movie’s soundtrack a household favorite.
Get Out – What we really liked about this film was that in addition to creating a great film, Jordan Peele did this with an incredibly low budget and similar crowd expectations for that matter. Yet he defied that and now has fully made it as a producer and director.
State the title of the song and the meaning.
‘Back to Dawn’ is a special piece for a number of reasons. First and foremost, it was just released this Sunday and was only our second release this summer, yet we continue to receive hundreds of compliments and such daily.
Additionally, the song is not only fun and very easy to vibe with, but has great lyrical meaning. The song is about the obstacles that life faces us with, and how sometimes we just fall into a daydream remembering our best times. It additionally utilizes a number of very interesting synths and instruments.
State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.
The title of the album is called, “NEW ERA”, which is a reference to both our new era of music creation and the incredible world that is so rapidly changing around us!
