ARTIST NAME: KTEE
SONG TITLE: Rich
RELEASE DATE: 26th July 2019
KTEE has been singing since the moment she spoke her first word and hasn’t stopped since.
Countless hours of her childhood were spent in her tiny room in Maria Neustift (Austria), her hometown. This is where she trained her voice on her own, relying only on her mother’s bulky red tape recorder. One pop song after another was recorded, listened to, analyzed, and re-sung until she was fully satisfied with the sound. In fact, 102 recordings were collected on her treasured cassettes to the point of breaking – literally.
Heavily influenced by her parents’ desire to see her with a degree that offered “proper career prospects” KTEE studied at the University of Vienna where she continued working on her singing skills – this time without her tape recorder and not at all alone. She not only had voice coaches to help with voice training but also roommates and neighbors to annoy with her “gugugus” and “nenenenes” in other words singing exercises. Once, her “understanding” neighbors even threatened to call the police for noise disturbance! – But she couldn’t and wouldn’t be stopped.
It wasn’t the university atmosphere, but her everlasting, internal yearning to sing that led her to move to Vienna.
Shortly thereafter, she successfully qualified in a singing competition (The Voice), which can be viewed as kind of the beginning of her career, since she got to know her present producer there.
After living abroad (Ireland), where she discovered her passion for songwriting, the urge to really make it big in the music industry was stronger than ever before and the search for her musical identity started anew.
“It took some time until I found my place in the world of music, but I never stopped following my dream and now I am more than happy to share who I am with the rest of the world.”
2016 KTEE released her powerful debut single ‘Rock your life.’ The message is clear: Live in the here and now! It’s your life, don’t waste precious time! Simply rock your life!
Her second single (2017) ‘Rollercoaster’ became a semi-finalist of the ISC 2017 (International Songwriting Competition). In this song, KTEE compares a rollercoaster ride with the ups and downs one experiences in a romantic relationship.
In February 2018 KTEE released her third single ‘So What’ and for which she got airplay on some UK radio stations. This song reflects the singer’s own development from a shy child full of self-doubts to a woman who knows her own mind and is strong and confident. ‘So What’ became her life motto. “Do what you love, haters gonna hate anyway. Follow your dreams, stay strong. And if you fall, stand up, shake off the dust and keep going.”
In January 2019 her single “Melody” was released in which she uses MUSIC as a metaphor for love. Melody also became a semi-finalist of the ISC. The song got airplay in Germany, England, and Switzerland.
In July 2019 her current single “Rich” was released. The catchy mood-lifting song is easy to sing and dance to and by singing “I am rich when I feel alive…” KTEE encourages young people to value the moments in their lives that do not cost a thing.
State your reason for choosing music as a career.
It wasn’t a choice, it was a necessity. Music has always been my life, as a kid, I practiced singing to Celine Dion songs using a brush as a microphone. The music business is a tough business, so I think no one would choose this career for money reasons, but only for “passion-reasons.”
Tell us how you write the lyrics to your song.
I used a pen and paper. 😉 No, well we were talking about how sad it is that we are all manipulated by ads and media telling us what we need to own/buy in order to be happy. And that having a lot of money doesn’t necessarily mean that you are “rich.” It’s the people, the places, the experiences, the ups, and downs…that make you rich!
Discuss your life outside the music world.
There is no life outside the music world – seriously! Everything I say and do is music-related. Okay, sometimes, when I want to give my brain a break, I watch TV series or read a Psychothriller.
Discuss your music career.
I started singing when I was a kid, at first I practiced in my room, where I made a lot of mistakes (wrong technique), then I took singing lessons, took part in competitions and finally found my producer and a team I love working with. As I said, the music business is tough, I fell so many times, cried many times, but never gave up. I am still fighting and my biggest wish is to reach my musical goals!
Elaborate on your artist’s name.
Nothing special about my artist name – My “real name” is Katharina, my nickname is Katy and I wanted it to look more special, so I chose KTEE :), looks cool and sounds a bit different, as the stress is placed on the second syllable.
List your five favorite music videos with reasons.
Sia- Chandelier: The performance of the girl is just incredible. Really talented!
Ariana Grande- Into you: I love the story (the secret romance with the bodyguard); I also like the look (colors).
Michael Jackson – Thriller: His dance moves are legendary. And I love the 80ies.
Jessie J- Not My Ex: It’s so simple, but yet so powerful.
KTEE – Melody: The first video I directed cut myself and I am really proud of it.
Tell us your source of inspiration.
My current mood, the conversations I had with people, experiences I or other people have passed through… these are some of the things I am inspired by. In addition, I need coffee, red bull, and the pressure of creating a masterpiece.
Tell us your experience of dealing with fans.
I love it when people love my music. It makes me happy to hear when one of my songs inspired other people or helped them in a difficult situation or just makes them want to dance. I always try to answer all the messages and questions they ask and of course treat them with respect.
Elaborate on the recording of this song.
I love experimenting with my producer in the studio. The good thing is that my producer owns one of Austria’s biggest studios, which means we have plenty of time to really try out sounds and grooves.
State your future projects.
I am working on my first album and new singles. The next release is planned for October 19. Of course, I plan to play as many concerts as possible and write as many songs as possible. There is always something to do. That’s what I love about this job. It never gets boring.
List the names of those that have supported you so far.
My team, my band, people who listen to my music and some radio stations. Thanks!
Tell us your point of view on vocal tuning.
I think it is okay to use e.g. auto-tune if it is part of the overall sound. However, I think it’s not cool if it’s necessary to use auto-tune because of the singer’s inability to stay in tune.
Tell us your thought on quality and quantity for the release of songs.
I think both are important. However, for me personally, quality is more important than quantity. I would be so unhappy if I would have to release something I am not 100% satisfied with. Of course, an artist shouldn’t be too slow either. Nowadays it is very important to regularly release new music…otherwise, you can soon be forgotten.
Tell us your viewpoint on comparing a music career to a non-music career.
In most non-music jobs, you get your monthly salary and you know what to expect. Being a musician means that you never know what happens next. On the one hand, this is kind of exciting because no day is like the other, but on the other hand, it can also be very frustrating and even scary, because…well, you never know that is going to happen or NOT happen next…
Tell us your opinion on categorizing music into genres and sub-genres.
Well, of course, it is useful to categorize music, especially when it comes to playlists. I wouldn’t want to have heavy metal songs in my favorite playlists.
However, I ask questions like “how would you describe your music”. I always say “Listen to it, and then you know it.”
State the genre you despise most with reason.
Heavy metal…Reason – I just cannot stand the electric guitar sounds, the beats, and the voices. I cannot listen to a heavy metal band for more than two minutes.
List your five favorite movies with reasons.
Dirty Dancing: I’ve seen it about ten times and it just reminds me of my childhood.
Seven Pounds: It’s so sad but so good – I couldn’t stop crying while watching it.
Friends: It’s not a film but a sitcom. It’s just so funny!
American Horror Story: Also not a movie, but a TV series: It’s really brutal but so thrilling! I couldn’t stop watching it.
German comedies: I love most of them. Especially films produced by Mathias Schweighöfer or Til Schwaiger.
State the title of the song and the meaning.
It’s called RICH. However, the song does not deal with her wearing “bling-bling” or having a big house and money in her pockets. In the song, KTEE celebrates her personal moments of happiness with the realization that “being rich” can have a lot of different meanings.
We are constantly told what we need to own in order to be happy and we are blinded by all of the things that we are supposed to have while being too blind to see what is right in front of us.
People tend to focus on things they cannot have instead of seeing and valuing the little joyful moments in their lives – the smile of a friend, a warm summer evening, making music, etc. “I am rich when I feel alive” – says KTEE and encourages young people to value the moments in their lives that do not cost a thing.
