leo irsara – A Flower for a Mountain Sailer
I was born in Brunico, Italy. I’m the second of four children (3 daughters and 1 son – me). My first musical experience was in a local church choir around the age of 13.
I later picked up the guitar and became a member of various school bands between 14 and 16. I wasn’t able to continue with music for around 15 years since I had to focus on my job in the catering sector.
I restarted playing around the age of 32 with a classic rock band named Burnout, which I remained in for 5 years. I then had to stop again for 3 years to focus on my hotel. I restarted again when I hit 40, and in the last year and a half, I’ve worked on my current album.

Tell us how you develop your sound and style to make it different from other musicians.
I started experimenting in my home with two good mics, two good amplifiers, and two good guitars, seeking a sound I enjoyed.

Tell us your opinion on the way new artists are coming up and the frequent release of songs.
I think that releasing too many songs often puts quantity above quality and can reduce the worth of an artist’s music. It’s better to have a few good songs than many low-quality ones.

Tell us your experience as a musician.
I’m a self-taught guitarist, bassist, and singer. I was the bassist of classic rock for 5 years, and later I started an alternative One-Man Band, producing music in my mother tongue, Ladin (a minority language is spoken in certain parts of Italy and Switzerland).

Tell us your opinion on streaming and digital download of songs.
I think it’s a great way for independent artists to distribute their music around the world, giving everybody the chance to have success with their music even without a label backing them up.

Tell us your goals and plans.
The main goal I’m working towards is touring in America.

Tell us five current artists that are your favorite.
JJ Cale, Pink Floyd, Morrisey, Noel Gallagher, and Bruce Springsteen.

Tell us your best song up to date.
The End of The Road.

Tell us your dream and hope for the future.
I hope I’ll always have the inspiration to continue to make positive music in the future.

Tell us what has changed in the music industry.
The internet has radically changed music distribution, making it harder to sell lots of albums and forcing artists to rely more and more on live events for constant revenue, which isn’t always easy (at least here in Europe). It’s also true that, as previously stated it’s much easier for independent artists to distribute their music today than it was 20/30 years ago.

Tell us your opinion on television/radio stations playing the same songs from established artists and giving little chances to independent artists.
I think it’s unjust; however, TV/radio stations are almost forced to give the spotlight to established artists because of royalties.

Tell us the challenges independent artists are facing and how to tackle them.
The main challenge for independent artists today is emerging from the highly saturated mass of music that the internet age has created. My way of tackling this is through my poetic approach to my lyrics, which I think makes me stand out from the rest.

Tell us your opinion on using social media to promote music online.
I think that while social media are certainly useful for promotion, they shouldn’t be abused, because your music might come off as overly pushed, making people shy away from it and see it as useless information.

Tell us what still motivates you to go on with your music career.
My music brings happiness to my life, and that’s all I need.

Tell us about you as a person.
I’m honest, trustworthy, altruistic, and tenacious. My hobbies are skiing and cycling.

Elaborate on the story behind the album.
This concept album talks about a man who made many mistakes in his life and has just come out of prison. He seeks solace traveling through the clouds (representing the mountains), and there he meets a flower (a metaphor for a woman) that he falls in love with, and through her, he learns that even those like him have a chance at redemption.

Tell us the process involved in making this album.
I wrote the songs and the lyrics, while my friend and drummer Giuliano arranged them. We recorded it half at my place and a half at his.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.
It is my legal name.

State the title of the album and the meaning.
A Flower for a Mountain Sailor – It means that through love (the flower) even a scoundrel (the sailor) can climb the mountain of redemption.
