Mars Togaia is a 22-year-old upcoming musical artist from Atlanta, Georgia. Her sound can be described as a dreamy alternative indie R&B, with unique influences of acoustic soul, indie, pop, and hip-hop.
Her earthy aesthetic can be attributed to her parent’s homelands, Jamaica and The Bahamas where she spent a lot of her childhood and adolescent summers.
Mars makes music to bring introspection and healing for those dealing with the darker parts of themselves and seeking liberation. She draws her reflective inspiration and lyrical fluidity from artists like Mereba, FKA Twigs, Raveena, Ravyn Lenae, Willow, UMI, and Orion Sun.
Mars began writing songs at the age of six and has kept up the art form throughout her life. Since she was sixteen, Mars has shared covers and originals of songs she wrote on online platforms like Instagram and YouTube, as well as performing live shows around Atlanta and at her school, Georgia State University…

LYRICS:

My mama tells me what she thinks that I should be
My daddy tells me what he thinks is a lady
Lonely hits me, too, when no one gets the way I think
They just wanna see their own idea of me
How it’s supposed to be, I don’t want that
Sounds limiting, weight on my back
There are more ways than what we have
What it takes to be there then I’ll do that
Finding more words, trying to express how it feels
Just doing my best
So, I redefine what I want from me

Living it easy
Open to play
Pouring love out
That’s my way
That’s my way
Creating beauty day after day
Peace in my veins
That’s my way
That’s my way

Did you think that I would stay in this game?
I definitely thought the same, but I’ve changed
In series, it was told to me in my dreams
Then, I woke up instantly free to be

Living it easy
Open to play
Pouring love out
That’s my way
That’s my way
Creating beauty day after day
Peace in my veins
That’s my way
That’s my way

Aye
That’s my way
That’s my way

Discuss how you get involved in music.
I’ve always been a musical person. My earliest memory is of me singing before Sunday school and having my dad record me. As a child, I sang and performed all the time and for everyone. I started writing my own songs when I was six years old. My parents enrolled me in piano lessons when I was nine, I joined the orchestra and played viola when I was ten, I learned the guitar when I was sixteen, and the ukulele when I was eighteen. I was also involved with my church’s youth band when I was a teen. Music has always been a really central part of my life.

Tell us how you develop the instrumentation for this song.
I first wrote this song on my acoustic guitar. I had no idea where I wanted it to go, production-wise. All I knew was that my favorite song at the time was “Giant Bat” by WENS. I was really inspired by the drums and simple soundscape of the song. So, I recorded my guitar and aimed for muted drums and minimalism within the rest of the production. The electronic drums came just from me playing around with the different drum pads. I was like “oh that sounds cool” and added it. That’s kind of how the whole production went, just me playing around with all the different sounds and deciding something sounded cool and adding it.

Go into detail on how you create your song.
First, I’m dealing with some emotions that need to be expressed. I picked up my guitar and started playing different chords in different ways to find a combination that properly expressed what I was feeling. Then I started singing melodies that fit, and then I write lyrics that fit the melodies and further express what I’m feeling. I might revise the song over the next couple of days, or weeks, depending on how “right” it feels. Then, I started producing it; the process went like how I described in the question above. Once production is done, I’ll record the vocals. Afterward, I’ll send it to an engineer and they will mix the vocals with the track and done!

Discuss your musical ability.
I play guitar, piano, ukulele, and I’m a singer-songwriter. I play guitar more than play piano or ukulele; I find it’s easier for me to express myself on there because I spent more time intentionally studying the instrument. I’m still a beginner with producing. For now, it just feels like a fun playground to explore.

Elaborate on the lyrics of the song.
Metanoia is about living a life of ease and authenticity after feeling as if you had many limitations and expectations placed on you for a while. It’s a song of deep introspection of whom you really are and choosing to show up as that person, as well as taking responsibility for your life and no longer letting others dictate it.

Discuss the structure of the song.
The song goes intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, and outro…

Discuss your performance.
I really want this song to have an airy, light, dreamy, indie feel to it. I envisioned the listener being able to close their eyes and daydream about what they truly want in life, and feel inspired to become still, quiet, and introspective. The performance is flowy.

Tell us how you prepare for a show or recording session.
I prepare for a show or recording session as soon as I wake up. The goal is to feel calm and authentic. So, I’ll start my day by meditating, some yoga, preferably outside if possible. It really helps me to center myself for the day and feel grounded. Since I’ll be using my voice a lot that day, I probably won’t speak and I’ll be constantly hydrating with water and tea, but I’ll do vocal exercises that morning. I’ll try to keep my day as low stress as possible and I’ll eat healthy meals that make me feel energized. Before the show/recording session, I’ll warm up my voice, do another little meditation, and then I’ll be ready to go.

Tell us how you coordinate other musicians or how you relate with your producer in bringing the best out of your song.
I haven’t done that much collaboration yet, but so far with the experience, I do have it’s mostly about already having some type of connection with the person you’re working with already. Feeling comfortable is so important because then you will feel free to bounce ideas and try new things and voice any dislikes. Finding musicians can be as easy as putting it out there on your Instagram story or reaching out to someone on Instagram, or just reaching out to one of your friends.

Tell us how you entice the listeners with your music.
I think my main way of enticing people is with my voice and melodies, from both my voice and the instruments I use. Emotion is everything to me, and if you can get people to feel an emotion that is close to home with them, they will feel a lot of affection for your song because seeing that emotion represented outside of themselves can bring a lot of healing. Whenever I’m working on a song pre-release and I share it with people, I always ask “how does it make you feel?”

Discuss how you promote your music.
On my social media! Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, Facebook. I’ll also submit to blogs and playlists. SubmitHub and Musosoup can help as well.

Tell us how you ensure your vocal is in harmony with the instrumentation.
If it feels right… If it feels off, even a little, I’ll fix it. As far as blending goes, that’s for my engineer. They will mix the vocals and make sure everything is in harmony.

Tell us how you build your vocal melody.
Just by playing around and really getting into the feeling of the message and emotions, I’m trying to convey… Humming and making gibberish noises until something really fits.

Elaborate on the song.
Metanoia is my first and debut single, I really wanted it to set the vibe of who I am and what my current musical and life journey is about. The song is free-spirited, introspective, authentic, and young-sounding.

Elaborate on your artist’s name and the title of the album.
Mars is from my middle name Marcie. I just cut it in half. Mars Togaia is to represent that I want my music to be my gift to this world. From Mars to the world, Mars Togaia… Metanoia means the journey of changing one’s mind, heart, self, or way of life.
