LYRICS:

You kissed me under the moon
Under the moon
You said I wanna be yours
I wanna be yours
You kissed me
Sand between our toes
Sharing secrets nobody knows

It’s in the waves (3X)
That crashed on the beach that day
That made you look at me that way
The Waves (3X)
That crashed on the beach that day
That made you look at me that way
Made you look at me that way
Way

You loved me
And held me still I never wanted anything to end
No, I don’t wanna go home
I don’t wanna leave this place
I just wanna look at the waves

I don’t wanna go home
I don’t wanna leave this place
I just wanna look at the waves

It’s in the waves (3X)
That crashed on the beach that day
That made you look at me that way
The Waves (3X)
That crashed on the beach that day
That made you look at me that way
Made you look at me that way
Way

Song Creation: Having been so sick of writing about sad stuff and heartbreak, I decided to write something a bit more romantic and explore something more joyful lyrically than focusing on my broken heart. For this particular track, I wanted to bring the theme of water and fluidity because love is like liquid, filling up the space of the container.

Themes: My musical themes tend to be emotional and central focused on how I’m feeling. In love, anxious, confident, all these emotions come through in my writing.

Musical Works: I believe that every release gets better and better, so I am super proud of this current release and also extremely proud of my last release Summer’s Gone. Summer’s Gone not only explores coming into your own again, but it plays with harmony and texture in a really unique way.

Music Process: The single was recorded at my producer (Scott)’s home studio. A simple living room set up with all the instruments… Joe Eldracher created the original track that was sent to me, and I took it and created a demo track at home. We then took it into the home studio to be properly recorded and to add embellishments.

Goals: I’d like to foster a larger community and following for my music that would allow me to support myself financially through music. I will continue to work hard, create art, and try to reach musicians and artists to find my space.

Changes: With the introduction of Spotify and similar platforms releasing an album has become more difficult to do without a large following. I grew up with CD’s and that’s something we don’t really deal with anymore. The music industry is oversaturated and so focused on the same sound and look… it becomes difficult for people to break through the mold. However, I feel it’s important to create diversity in sounds and looks and not always have the same cookie-cutter Kardashian look.

Greatest Mistake: The greatest mistake to avoid would be having no care or stakes in the message of the song. When you don’t care about the content it’s so obvious in the music.

Song Structure: “The Waves” has a really mellow and simple structural approach. Not straying far from the Verse, Chorus, Verse, and Chorus kind of energy, but the song’s energy doesn’t call for big switches and lays on the beat for the entire song.

Instruments: Production goes through many phases; we lay down the vocals after the demo phase, and that’s when we really start to play around. Joey, one of the producers, is incredible on guitar so we had to get some licks in there for this track. We ended up re-recording the synth tracks from the demo to a Wurlitzer piano. Things that help add dimension and attention to detail will be messed around with.

Musical Skills: I am a trained vocalist who went to college under vocal study.

Favourite Artists: Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, Christina Aguilera, Etta James.

Inspiration: I take inspiration through my emotions and not always current emotions. For this track, I thought back to four years ago when I fell in love with someone special on the beach. Sometimes exploring old feelings can help you process your current ones.

Song: The Waves was born out of being sick of writing about heartbreak, so I tapped into the feeling of love when it first began. The Waves is a romantic, cozy tune that explores falling in love while playing on the beach and staring at the waves.  Knowing you never want the night to end because of how delicate and perfect love is in this moment. And like the waves love is fleeting.

Artist’s name and Album’s Title: Melissa Mills is my birth name and the title of the song just fits perfectly. It didn’t seem like it could be called anything else.
