NEAVV – Keep
NEAVV is an alternative synth-pop artist and songwriter from Toronto, Canada who also happens to have a master’s degree in opera performance. She has been writing and performing for over 15 years and has been recognized for her powerful vocals, her strong lyrics, and catchy songwriting and recently signed a publishing deal with Last Gang Records. She has performed across Canada, in Europe, and The US and has spent time in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, L.A., and Nashville writing for her own project, for other artists, and toplining for producers. NEAVV’s songs have been played on Canadian mainstream radio, featured in film and television, and she has shared the stage with contemporaries Mother Mother, KONGOS, Coleman Hell, Scott Helman, among others. In April 2018 NEAVV signed a worldwide single deal with UK label Enhanced Music for the song “All or Nothing”, a collaboration with European producers Anki and October Child, on which she co-wrote and was featured. Since its release, it has already amassed close to a million plays and has been endorsed by Tiesto, Don Diablo, Tritonal, and more. NEAVV’s debut album “Fall Hard. Get Sad.” is set to release this fall and has already gained early support from industry professionals including Dan Kurtz (Dragonette) and David Bendeth (Paramore, Sleeping with Sirens).
Tell us your real names, country of birth, and childhood experience.
I was born in London Ontario Canada but have lived in Edmonton Alberta, Spruce Grove AB, Vancouver BC, Montreal, and now live in Toronto Canada. My first instrument was actually the violin but I also grew up singing in choirs and attending a performing arts school. I was always drawn to music.
Tell us your academic qualification.
I have a master’s degree in Opera Performance.
Elaborate on your music career, band name, experience, and skills.
NEAVV is a family name but I gave it an alternate spelling so I would be easily found online.
Tell us your genre and idea behind your music video/song.
The music I make is alternative synth-pop and is a unique blend of alternative pop elements like edgy intricate guitars blended with current synth textures and electronic beats usually found in synth-pop music. The songwriting and crafty lyrics find inspiration in contemporary Top 40 Pop songs for their slick catchiness, yet maintain a darker emotional depth found in Alternative leaning bands and artists such as Churches, PVRIS, and The Neighbourhood. Everything I write comes from a very honest place and is usually about something I have personally gone through. “Keep” is no different.

Tell us how you are promoting your music.
I’m working with a great team right now that are helping me to promote my music. We are promoting online to blogs and playlist creators, have a college radio campaign starting this month in the US and Canada, have lined up some TV placements, and of course, shows are happening!
Explain the story behind the song.
I wrote “Keep”, with Wendy Parr (Regina Spektor and Sara Bareilles’ vocal coach) while on a 2017 writing trip to Nashville. I thought that I had already written all the songs for my forthcoming debut album, Fall Hard. Get Sad. But there was just something about “Keep” that clicked with me and dV, my producer – we both instantly knew that it had to be included on the record. At the time, I was struggling with how to manage some unhappy relationships in my life that were holding me back. “Keep” was born out of that. The song is not necessarily about letting go of anyone’s friendship or relationship, but more about the moment when you finally see someone for who they really are, rather than how you hoped they might be or wish they could become.

Tell us other activities you are pursuing apart from music.
Music takes up most of my time these days. Outside of my own project I also write with and for other artists. When I do have time you can either find me in the pool (I’m on a master’s swim team) or hanging with my dog.
Tell us how long you have been in the music business, your experience, and your future goal.
I’ve been doing this for too long to count and I think my experience is similar to many other artists… it’s a tough industry to be in and you have to look at it as a marathon, not a sprint. Nothing happens overnight even if it looks that way and most of what happens are out of your control. My future goal is to tour, release more music for my own project and continue to write for other artists.
Tell us what makes you unique from others.
I think my voice and the music I create are actually what make me unique. I think the melodic influences of having spent so many years singing opera sneaks into my writing and adds an interesting element to the already unique production. I also don’t think my voice sounds like anyone else these days.
