ARTIST NAME: Over the Sea
SONG TITLE: Keep it Shining
ALBUM TITLE: Keep it Shining
RELEASE DATE: 11 January 2019
GENRE: Indie, Singer-Songwriter, Blues
Over the Sea is a singer-songwriter duo stretched across the North Sea.
The band first got together in 2012 as a drunken endeavor of Ays Sirakaya and Hugh McNaul in London. What started as an acoustic weekday jam session in a common room at a student hall evolved into constant writing and creating. Since then the band has not settled in one city. Yet the creativity kept flowing despite the distance as the duo kept writing music together.
Their music tells the tales of two distant and unfamiliar cultures via stripped-down, clean melodies with a dash of bluesy melancholia.
State your reason for choosing music as a career.
At this moment, music is our passion. We both have our careers and we try to dedicate it to music. Ays is a full-time lawyer and a Ph.D. researcher. Hugh is a designer. Yet, we are musicians at heart as we have been on this road for seven years now.
Tell us how you write the lyrics to your song.
The lyrics of Keep it Shining came to Ays rather unexpectedly in an elevator. There was really not a romantic moment for it. Most of our songs just end up in our minds and the only way to get them out of there is to write them down. There is not a systematic approach to it.
Discuss your life outside the music world.
Ays lives in Ghent and Hugh lives in Dublin. We are in two distant cities and live two distant lives yet we try to let the music bring us together one way or another.
Discuss your music career.
We began seven years ago yet all of our songs were kept between the two of us and some close friends. 2018 being not so great year for us, gave us inspiration and drive to finally go for it and get out there and do more with what we have. It has so far been an amazing path with many surprises and of course, some pay-offs as well as drawbacks. Putting yourself out there with something that is all you, is far from easy. It taught us a lot of lessons about who we are and what we want from life.
Elaborate on your artist’s name.
Over the Sea refers to how we make music. We transmit melodies to one another between two continents, basically over the North Sea.
Tell us your source of inspiration.
Any good and bad life brings. Life is an extremely complicated path, nothing is certain, everything is open-ended. This play-dough structure of living is utmost inspiring in itself.
Tell us about your future projects.
We have a pool of songs ready to rumble, we just hope to get them out there, share them with people by either Spotify, iTunes, etc., or through gigs and tell our story. The latter is basically why this band is out there.
Tell us your point of view on vocal tuning.
Simple, clean, no additives.
Tell us your opinion on categorizing music into genres and sub-genres.
This has been very difficult for us. Apart from very obvious, clear-cut songs, we think that every song has its unique genre, tune, and sound. We wouldn’t even think all our songs would fit into a single genre.
State the title of the song and the meaning.
Keep it Shining is written at the time when our singer, Ays, was having just the time of her life in terms of relationships while having found an immense connection with Hugh to make music, living in London, feeling like opportunities are endless and the sky is the limit. Yet, every-happiness comes with the fear of losing it. ‘Keep it Shining’ is basically a wish, a prayer if you will, hoping to be able to keep going on with the happiness that is finally there.
