We are Billy Kurth, Hayden Stelly, and Austin Fults. We were all born in America in the early 90s.

 

 

 

 

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.

The group first formed in 2009, but we made music for shits and giggles and didn’t really take it seriously. After taking a multi-year hiatus, we got back together in 2015 and started doing live shows. The live shows helped us hone our sound, find out what works and what doesn’t, and allowed us to build a fan base. We have dropped two small mixtapes since reforming, but this is our first official project.

  

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

The song started as a kind of dark trap song, flipping an ominous vocal sample over grunge influenced bass. However, we played the song at a show with a live band, and it dawned on us that the song actually had a very metal vibe to it. We got the guitarist to come on the song so we could push it further in that direction. The concept is inspired by the film Spring Breakers, which is a movie that has been very influential to us as musicians. This song summarizes the corruption of innocence that takes place in the film.

 

 

 

 

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

We are inspired by a range of musical genres and we incorporate a lot of those different elements in our music. Our new album has anything from sunny Lil Yachty style beats, to the metal-rap of Angel With an AK, to ambient scores inspired by John Carpenter and Cliff Martinez. When we make albums, we put a lot of focus on the concept of the album and how each song fits into this concept. We’re all huge movie fans, so the story (regardless of how abstract) becomes a major element of our projects. We haven’t really had a chance to have high points or low points in our careers yet.

The music video was self directed, recorded using a DSLR and an iPhone 7, with effects added in post. The song was also self produced, with added guitar by William Murry of The Iceman Special.

 

 

 

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

Long term goal: become successful enough as musicians to produce our own films. Short term goal: play at Buku (music festival in New Orleans) in 2018.

 

 

 

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

We are ultimately story tellers, and we have found that music is the easiest venue for us to tell our stories. We are inspired by music, movies, and life.

I think the secret to making a hit song is coming up with a powerful melody. Not just something catchy, but something that sticks with you. Something I’ve learned from Nirvana: lyrics can be secondary to the melody.

Create melody first, fill in the melody with lyrics second. Once I’ve done that, I get a concept for the song from those lyrics, and build the rest of the song around that concept.

-Kendrick Lamar (attention to detail, concept albums).

-Kevin Parker (ambitious musically, more abstract concepts, handles many different aspects of the music).

-Grimes (self produced, takes time with her music and only releases what she believes is of high quality).

-John Carpenter (great story teller, uses music to aid his stories, makes songs that feel complete without vocals).

-Brian Wilson (Thinks outside of the box, meticulous, focused).

Our journey has only just kicked off with the single in July. We are currently working on a full album. The song itself is a kind of meditation on waking your soul up to the unknown. It contemplates the possibilities behind daring life choices. We are motivated by our audience. We look at performance as a kind of collaboration between ourselves and the crowd.

We just started recording over summer so we are not as experienced as other bands out there when it comes to business and booking shows and all that. That’s the biggest struggle, we think.

We don’t really have a process for writing songs just yet. Bryce does most of the lyrical stuff and sets up the skeleton for the song, and then we add on to it, and then more is added, and so on. We cut the track at Mix Kitchen, a recording studio in downtown Chicago, and then send it off to Roland Lim, our mix/master specialist to get it sounding radio ready. It’s more of a learning experience than anything else. We’ve been doing that for about five months and it seems to be working.

There really is no secret to making a hit song, because it’s all subjective right? We think that if you can genuinely inspire a large group of people one way or another, you’ve tapped into a corner of common human emotions. That’s what we aim to do. Provoke a reaction.

My name is Harrison Kipner and I was born in Los Angeles California. I grew up in a house of music. My father and grandfather were professional song writers. My dad had a home studio where he worked and had writers, producers, and artists there every day of the week like P!NK, Christina Aguilera, The Script, Tina Turner and so many more. Every day after school I would go down to the studio with fresh cups of tea as an excuse to be a fly on the wall. Pop music was a way of life, and at the dinner table when everyone came up for a break, is where I got my education. My grandfather wrote big songs like “Too Much Too Little Too Late” by Johnny Mathis and Denice Williams, and he also signed The Bee Gees In Australia and produced their first number one hit, “Spicks and Specks”. So ya, basically there was a good amount of pressure for me to do music. I avoided it for a while but when I moved away from home and went to college, it all came naturally.

 

 

 

 

 

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

This song, “Heaven and Lemon” is all about the extreme dynamics of a sweet and sour relationship. The extreme highs and lows are so exaggerated, and there is no warning when either will come. It started with he guitar riff which is soft, and the idea of a huge explosion away from that was really exciting.

 

 

 

 

 

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

Out of college I co wrote a song for Nelly (the rapper haha) called “Hey Porsche”. It was very bizarre and pretty much accidental. I wrote this song with my friend David Glass without any intention of selling it to someone specifically, especially a rapper, it was an indie rock song. After the song was a hit, especially in Europe and Australia, I spent a few years doing song writing sessions trying to come up with the next one. Basically I was doing exactly what my father and grandfather did, and there isn’t anything wrong with that, but deep down I knew I wanted to be the artist. Every song had me so conflicted, if I didn’t like the song or session, I blamed it on the industry or the artist, and if I liked it, then I was just jealous! So obviously that wasn’t going to work. I made the decision about 3 years ago to completely stop doing writing sessions so that I could find and develop my own unique sound. I definitely didn’t think it would take this long, but I’m here now, and I couldn’t be happier.

My partner in crime for this single, and my last song “The Year of Rebecca” is Benjamin Greenspan. We met when he was in a band called Fences and immediately hit it off. He moved from Boston to LA soon after and we’ve been writing and producing together ever since. His sense of song form is incredible. Combined with years of engineering, it all culminated in these songs. We are both so so excited about it and I couldn’t think of a better person to share this with.

 

 

 

 

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal.

My Nelly hit was 2013, so professionally since then I guess, but I’ve been here my whole life. My goal? Besides just being happy and healthy, I don’t think I have specific goals. I’m going to make music and hone my skill for the rest of my life. My goal is to just get better and better and create a lane for myself where I don’t need to conform to any genre or rules. I want to make pop music, and broaden the horizons of what people think ‘pop’ is.

 

 

 

 

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

Every time I write, I get a warm fuzzy feeling, and this excitement in my core. Even when I look back and think the song isn’t that great, it doesn’t matter. The moment when its all coming out and I’m translating feeling into something tangible I am happy, and that’s it honestly. I love to tell stories, I want my songs to evoke little movies in your head like a good book.

 

 

 

 

 

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

Hit songs… I think that the secret is honestly just persistence. You’re always only one song away. If you give every single song you write the love and attention it deserves, one of them will just resonate. My dad was in the studio every single day from the time I went to school in the morning to way after I went to bed. He loved every minute of it. He has so many hit songs, but the amount of amazing songs that I know of his that never made it is staggering. Its just love and persistence.

Message to the few fans and friends I have. I vow to do this the rest of my life. I also vow to respect your knowledge of music as much as anyone in the industry. Music is everybody’s. We are all experts in music and sometimes we musicians forget that, I will not.

 

 

 

 

 

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

My advice to my fellow artists starts with me saying that I have no idea how to do this. Next I would say, “write your own bio”. Don’t have other people do everything for you, there is so much to learn on the way.

The beginning of this year, completely out of the blue because I’m entirely independent and unknown, Rick Astley took me on tour all across the US and Europe, culminating in me playing for over 30,000 people at a show in the south of England. It has been the greatest experience of my life, and I will love him FOREVER.

Ed Sheeran is totally killing it and he’s writing great songs, I can’t not appreciate that., I love Beck and how he fearlessly redefines himself every album. Coldplay has always been a love. Phantom Planet is a less known band that I’ve been obsessed with my whole life. Then probably Outkast, for their pure genius and cool that I could never come close to. Actually I change my mind, my favorite artist is Blake Mills, hands down. His music hits me so deeply.

I just started writing music a couple years ago with a few of the guys I hanged out with. It started as kind of just doing it in our spare time but I started to write more , go to studios more and started listening to a lot more music. Michael Ko-Bena Buado was conceived in Liberia on January 5, 1988. His music is only a path for an introvert to be an extrovert. His production is based on Hip-Hop with a mix of a little Soul. The vast majority of his music videos were shot and edited by him.

Influenced by popular artists like Tupac and Nas, his inspiration was completely derived from the 90’s Hip-Hop which impacted his songwriting too.

 My real name is Nolan Forghani. Born in the United States on February 1st, 1994.

I grew up in a small town just north of San Francisco called Rohnert Park, in a very suburban neighborhood of an otherwise rural part of northern California. I have a pretty big family and we are all very close. My childhood involved lots of family events and parties. I played a bunch of sports growing up and lived a pretty “normal” life…whatever that means. I was fortunate to be able to travel a lot throughout my childhood, and enjoyed every minute of it. I have so many fond memories of my childhood and I owe everything to parents.

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.

Music has always been a part of my life, I was always singing and putting on shows at family parties even when I was like 4. I started taking guitar lessons at 8 years old and wrote my first song when I was twelve. I had been writing songs and singing obsessively all the way through high school. For Christmas one year, my oldest brother gave me my first recording software, with a midi keyboard and a mic. That’s when things really started for me, I was probably like 17. I began recording all the songs I had written on guitar and piano and tried to teach my self how to produce at the same time. At that time I had been listening to a lot of rap music and it seemed so much easier to steal a beat off of youtube and rap over it, rather than making my own full production. So that’s when I tried my hand at rapping, and it was kind of as a joke at first. I started getting better and better and knew I wanted to continue making music. I ended up going to college at California Lutheran University to get a degree in Music Production. After my four years at school, I was ready to produce a professional quality record. But even after I had graduated I struggled to really find my sound, because I was still playing acoustic guitar and piano writing softer singer/songwriter type of songs, but all I wanted to do was rap. I took to the studio and busted out song after song without even putting them out, just to work through my creative block. Once I was comfortable with where it was heading I knew something had to change. I had been going by my birth name, Nolan Forghani until just recently I made the switch to my artist name of FOLEY. Shortly after, I released by debut ep “Who is Foley” which I produced and mix myself.

It is hard to define my genre, and I’m okay with that. For so long I tried to make my music fit a certain type of genre but it never seemed authentic. It’s not a typical hip/hop song, but it’s not really indie or top 40. My idea when making music is to just take my favorite elements from my favorite kinds of music and turn into something unique that I can call my own. I like to take pop vocals and melodies and sing it over hip/hop beats and things like that. I know it’s not a real genre but I’ve been calling it hip/pop.

As an artist I think I am very versatile, which can be good but to an extent has been the source of some of my hardships in the industry. A lot of people told me to take the singer/songwriter route and stick to playing acoustic guitar it was easier to market and fit my image more. But I wasn’t happy with the music I had been making. I tried to ditch that whole image and went all in on the rap thing, which wasn’t really me either. I took me a long time to realize all I had to do was be myself, and that’s when the music started connecting more. I feel like that authenticity was felt. I’m not trying to be someone I’m not or make some type of music because that’s what I think people will want. I make music for myself first and foremost.

I produce all of my music myself but I’d be wrong if I didn’t shout a couple people out. I live with one of my friends who is also a producer name Johnathan Luu, and most of my stuff goes through him before I finalize anything. He really acts as a second pair of ears for me and I really trust his opinion because we’re such good friends and he’s not afraid to tell me when something sucks. This song also features one of my good friends Harrison Sands. I had the chorus already written when I called him to get on it. I did a version of it myself but just didn’t like how it sounded; I knew it would fit his voice perfectly. He came over and laid down the hook for me and then got back to me with his own verse which is the 2nd verse you hear. He is a super talented kid with a crazy voice and just a cool swagger to how he writes songs.

I have been recording music for about five years now but I wasn’t doing much other than posting on YouTube and Souncloud and doing a few shows here or there. I was in school trying to educate myself on how to navigate through this industry for four years of that. So realistically I have been in the real world, trying to make music for a living for a little over a year now. Right now I’m just trying to build a fan base, because my future goal is touring. I don’t care if its independent or with a label, if I can sellout a headlining tour, that’s honestly my definition of success or where I would like to be.

Singing is always just something I liked to do, but I get inspired just by being a genuine fan of music and wanting to be next to my idols. There’s really no way to tell. The people decide. You could make a song you think is a smash but nobody vibes with it. And on the other hand you could put out some throw away song you didn’t even want to release and it goes number one. The people are really the ones who dictate what songs become hits. But I think if it’s authentic to who the artist is, that’s when people can really connect with it the most.

 I don’t mean to be cliché but my message to people is to do what makes you happy. Don’t do something because it’s safe or it’s what people expect you to do/ have told you to do. I know I could have got a nice job in an office and probably made a good living doing something in the business world but I would be living a miserable life. I had to chase my dream because I wouldn’t have been able to live with myself if I didn’t give it everything I had. Ignoring your passion is slow suicide.

Just keep working and have patience. There’s always going to be someone out there who is better than you, so don’t worry about being the best out. Worry about how hard you are working and as long as your next song is better than your last one, you’re heading in the right direction. Don’t give up just because you don’t see immediate results. It’s a long long process and you just have to trust it will be worth it. If you hold on and don’t give up, as the years go by a lot of those people who might have been better than you talent wise, but didn’t work as hard, will have fallen off and are going be wishing they had what you got.

Because this EP is my debut, I don’t have list of awards or anything like that but I have put out several videos on YouTube and now have my EP streaming on Spotify/Apple Music etc… As far as notable shows, I got to play at The House of Blues on sunset in Hollywood in 2015, And last year I opened for Sage the Gemini which was a show that had around 1,200 people in the crowd.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

Nothing too crazy, I normally will either write down ideas in my phone or take a voice memo of a certain melody I have as it pops in my head throughout the day. I try to then make the beat around the certain feel I have for the record. And once I have the basics of the beat done, I’ll put it on a loop and actually physically write down the lyrics in a notebook, something about that makes the words feel more permanent, therefore I’m more careful with what I’m saying. He’s one of those guys that when you see him work in the studio, it’s like woah…he’s different. And again I’m just a big fan of Abhi’s music. Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

My happiest day is probably when I opened for Sage the Gemini. It was the biggest crowd I had ever performed in front of, around 1,200 people. It was the first time I rapped on a stage too. Any show I had done before, I was always sitting behind a piano or guitar. Being able to run around on stage and engage and interact with the crowd was the best experience. There was something so natural about it that made me know that this is what I was meant to do with my life. One of the best things about that night is that for the most part my main music supporters had been primarily my close friends and family but that night there were hundreds of people who didn’t even know me and to see them enjoying my music was one of the most amazing feelings.

My saddest day has to do with the death of one of my best friends last year, and not to be rude but it’s something I’d rather not get into..

My Name is Dorion Smith (aka the “Smifbrud Prince”). I’m From the US, born November 19, 1988. I come from a small family based in Washington State. I spent most of my childhood in Seattle, then moved to Richland, in eastern Washington, in the summer of 2002. I graduated from Richland High in 2007 and had my daughter in April of 2010.

I have been writing music since i was in grade school. I started taking it seriously after i realized i had raw talent that i dare not waste! I have a musical background of mostly R&B Soul, Hip Hop, Jazz, and lots and lots of bass! I am an artist, song writer, engineer, and vocalist.

 I do mostly Hip Hop and R&B. I like to embrace the struggle of the under-dog and the grind of putting in work for what you want in life. The concept of this whole project focuses on embracing where i am from/where i live and what lessons i have to pass on to the next aspiring go-get-er.

I am a father trying to make a legacy for my young of how to put integrity and honor in to everything you do-and that goes far beyond the music. I try my best to embrace the downs of the business more so than the ups. It makes for so much more of a sweeter high when it comes!! As far as I am concerned the only “L’s” I am going to take is a “Lesson”- negative and positive alike. I keep my mouth closed and eyes and ears open. The Nay-sayers are non existent.

At this point I am a “solo” everything. I have a couple of friends who help me on the boards and what-not when I am recording, other than that, its just me baby!

I am just barely getting my name out there the last couple of years. Right now  I am focusing on promoting my music and getting it out to the public to hear.  I have been constructing projects successfully now for about three years. I have a total of four independent projects on wax and ready for digital download on multiple digital platforms, including cd baby,  band camp, Soundcloud and more.  My future goal is to take advantage of every digital platform available and get as many streams as possible. I also plan to reach out and network with other artist and build relationships.

 

 

 

 

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

My main inspiration right now would be partly a good momentum that I have kept going after realizing my talent. It also stems from the emotions and the feelings that I experience when I listen to different songs, beats, stories or any other  content that allows me to step outside and challenge myself to have empathy for others than I.

 

 

 

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

I will not pretend like I know the exact formula to  making a hit song  but what I have found to work is to just “let the beat ride”. Allow yourself to really feel the beat and let your mind/body/soul go wherever the feeling takes you. I think with these types of things, normally, whatever comes to you first is right. Just go with it.

 

 

 

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there. 

If I could pass along a message to my fans it would be, life is short.  This is my life, and I want to spend it enjoying what I do.  I really enjoy making music. And I just so happen to be good at it. Why not do what you want to do in your life right? Only difference between me and the next guy is I have no problem doing the work.  Just give me a couple minutes of your time and you can decide for yourself.

The best advice I have thus far that I could give to an upcoming artist would be never ever doubt your self. You absolutely have to believe that whatever you are striving for is possible if you are willing to put in the work. And never  allow your pride to keep you from learning a lesson  or growing as a person.

Thus far I have a total of four projects available for digital download on Cdbaby.com as well as Google play and others. These projects consist of the following; Trey All Day (2015), Straight Outta The Trey (2016), The Coast (2017) and Back 2 The Trey (2017). I am still on the prowl for my first venue to turn out, however I have collaborated with other local artists on their projects as well as my own.

My songwriting process almost always starts with the beat first. Once I hear the beat and I figure out where I want to go with it and how it makes me feel i go from there with either the verses or the hook.  I always go with what I feel.

I have  a great deal of favorite artists however I don’t follow them very much outside of Music.  If I had to just spitball the first ones that come to my head respectively of course  it would be in no particular order, Nipsey Hussle, Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, Big Sean, Fabolous, Tech N9ne.

Some artists that I would like to collaborate with in the future will consist of the same names above  that I consider to be idols and more. Especially some of the newer generation. I have collaborated with a slew of artists so far and hopefully more n the future. Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

One of the Happiest days in my life is undoubtedly when my daughter was born. I believe as a father that goes without being said but just so we’re clear 🙂 Also when i become a LMT and my career finally took off putting me in a much better financial position. The saddest day that i can think of to this day was when our cat “Booda” (aka Booty Boy) of 7 years died from a cat-type cancer. My daughter and I were in shock as this was such a surprise and we were so attached to him. He was not just a cat, he was/is a member of our family. That was tough but we got through it. In fact we still talk about him till this day.

Started off as a producer who got into Electro House, learned how to DJ and then started gravitating towards pop more and more.

I come from a family which has always valued instrumental music that could actually be played live very highly.

It was hard for me to accept my love for the electronic part at first. It’s funny because I started off as 100% electronic but are slowly getting to a fresh mix between the two.

I started study music at Musikmakarna this year hoping to solidify my songwriting skills.

The concept of this song is not having enough roads to walk on when trying to clear things out with someone you love.

Clearly the people this song is about are drifting apart and would need to have all the time in the world to set things straight, while taking this ‘walk of a lifetime’.

It’s like my mix of bleeding feet, soar souls, love gone bad but with an uplifting production and vibe somehow.

I’m 26, studying the secrets of hit-making at Swedens finest school of songwriters and producers called ‘Musikmakarna’.

It’s fantastic getting thrown into that environment where you have nothing else to do but to share tips and tricks and sit endlessly in the studio.

The ups and downs we all face at some point could either be fuelling your songwriting or blocking your creativity; to me it’s different every time.

For me I’ve started to care less about the commercial success and more about the creative success, in other words being proud of your work and satisfied with your writing. For me personally that was a hard thing to do, and once you get the hang of it everything becomes easier, let go of your ego and do it for the music.

I started in the end of 2013, back then it was only electro house and tracks, I rarely wrote lyrics or vocal melodies,

things started to change gradually and now I’m always more concerned about the top line than the track.

But I guess that’s easy to say now that I’ve put in endless of hours learning how to produce/mix/master my ideas into fruition.

I can afford to stay focused on the topline now that I feel like the production is something I always have with me, thankfully.

Right now all my amazing up and coming songwriter friends are my main source of inspiration.

Also shout-out to Spotify Discovery Weekly who always comes up with what’s fresh and good.

Secrets to a hit are easier said than done. To me a good song could be played with just a singer and a piano/guitar, but that is counter-intuitive to how I myself work. I like to produce some kind of quirky beat with a simple chord progression and then start from there.

If I’m in a session with several others it’s easier to just go out and sit by the piano and sing together and making the beat afterwards.

 

  

 

 

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

My number one tip which I’m not even following myself (yet) is writing lots of songs.

If you write 100+ songs a year then a handful has to be amazing. Also you become better much faster.

Think about balance, If you have complex melodies in the verse then it’s nice to fall back on something simple in the refrain and the other way around.

If you can sing your song with only a piano as your tool and you still think the refrain “lifts” (really feels like a great addition to the song) then you’ve got something good.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

With my lyrics I always start off with the pre-chorus or chorus, Cause if you get that right it’s easy to talk about something that leads into it.

Other times I take a piece of poetry that I’ve written and see if there is something in there that I could add a chord progression to and start jamming.

 

To be totally honest those ways are awesome and all but what happens most of the time is that I start with producing a track

and I get inspired from that and start humming weird shit that I then try to add real lyrics too.

I’m trying though; to steer away from that because you can easily be locked down in a certain word that just don’t fit, and then you have a hard time moving on just because everything else sounds weird after enough of listening to it.

Tove Styrke – because her sound and her voice are the next big thing in my opinion. Ilya Salmanzadeh (hes not an artist though but he’s a producer/songwriter). James Blake – because he doesn’t give a damn about the rules set by most songwriters, it’s like he has no boundaries, so experimental.

Mord Fustang – my first big idol, the one who got me started with producing music in the first place. I listened to his ‘Electric Dream’ back in 2011 and I was hooked.

haha that was a weird combo, but I love all of them. Together they are the perfect human to me.

I wouldn’t want to combine them of course but they have different aspects from each other if you know what I mean.

I have collaborated with ILY, she is such a cool person! And we wrote my last song ‘Slap In The Face’ together which she also sings on.

Lots of things happening for her and with OUT OF THIS WORLD music videos together with her songs.

 

Maline is an artist that I’ve been lucky to have written this song ‘Longer Road’ with.

She is a fantastic singer and I think she is one of the best topliner I know of that I’ve ever worked with.

I would love to work with her again of course!

 

If I could choose someone that I would like to work with then that would be ‘Blende’ or ‘Oliver Nelson’.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

My happiest day was rather recently, my first week on my school where I study songwriting at ‘Musikmakarna’ (Music creators).

The second-graders gave us first-graders tasks to complete in the small town nearby.

It was loads of fun and then we all met up at this bar and listened to songs that had been put together from 3 different parts.

The whole thing was that each group got like 15 minutes to produce/mix/record either a verse/chorus/or pre-chorus and tightly thereafter another group had to continue on it, but you weren’t allowed to listen on what they had done, You had to continue only knowing the key and bpm.

It was so fun and people really surprised one another with how cool something ended up.

Yeah that was my happiest day that I can recall right of the bat like that.

 

My saddest day has got to be sometime when I got rejected. Love hurts.

Morgen La Civita, United States (we’re really sorry about Trump), Date of birth: April 27, 1973. I grew up in Jersey City which is right outside of New York City where I also lived for a few years.

 

 

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.

Morgen La Civita is a singer/songwriter , now residing in Easton, Pennsylvania. She has been featured on over 30 albums and has received airplay from stations including WWOZ in New Orleans, Jazz88 in San Francisco and NBC’s “Good Morning New Orleans”. Morgen’s lyrics have been featured in American Songwriter Magazine, and she’s been a Songwriter Universe featured artist numerous times. Her song, “What Love Can Do” was used in a Kia Soul advertisement in Amsterdam, where she has a strong following, and her song “Down The Rabbit Hole” has been used in two independent films. In addition to writing and recording, she is also a recording and editing engineer. 

 

 

 

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song. 

My genre is mostly singer/songwriter, although I love to blend world, soul and blues into my music as well. My partner, Jake R. Tanner, is a two-time Grammy winning engineer in the Latin music industry, so you can hear a lot of his influences as well in our productions. Most everything I write is introspective and a little dark. I’m big on minor keys and “chill”. This song was written about my experience falling in love too quickly and blindly, without really knowing what I was getting into. It’s about not wanting to take responsibility for being impulsive. It’s always easier to blame someone else than to look at your own mistakes. The video was made from a 1915 version of “Alice in Wonderland” and was put together by my good friend, Dave Davis who did a few of my videos. I love pairing my music with old movies. I feel like it gives it drama.

 

 

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business. 

I think, because I write from personal experience, I am often told that my music is not relatable or commercial enough. A lot of today’s commercial music is big and loud, and I don’t fit very well into that mold. I love the storytelling nature of the songs from the 60’s and 70’s, and always seem to lean that way. I prefer minimal productions to big ones and tend to be a bit “wordy”. On the upside, when a song is right for a project, it tends to be a project I really love and is really different in its own right. That makes me feel really good. Like I made a connection with someone else who doesn’t quite fit the mold either.

 

 

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot. 

Jake R. Tanner is the producer, musician and arranger for this track. He also mixed and mastered it. I love his string arrangements and he does them for all my tracks. I write the lyrics and melodies and record and edit the vocals. The song was recorded in our home studio. The video was created when I wanted to come up with an idea that was budget friendly. I also have horrible stage fright, so I don’t do performances very often. I felt like this song didn’t really need a video of me, and I loved the idea of pairing it with an old movie. My friend, Dave Davis put it all together for me.

 

 

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience and your future goal. 

I’ve only been in the music industry for about 10 years, but Jake has over 25 years experience. I started out with just writing lyrics, and then moved to singing. I always envisioned writing for TV and movie placements as opposed to being a touring or performing artist. I would also love to see one of my songs be covered by a big artist or remixed by a great DJ.

 

 

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing. 

I’m inspired by life events. I tend to write about sadder things because I feel like, for me, that elicits the most emotion and motivation. I am very partial to simple piano, in a minor key and heavy, sad cello pieces. I also love percussion instruments. They seem to move me more than traditional drum kit sounds. I like things that sound old.

 

 

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song. 

I have no idea, as I haven’t written one yet lol. But, I’m told a catchy hook is really important as well as a lot of changes in a song. I do think the song should bring out emotion and resonate with people in some way too.

 

 

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there. 

I’m weird. And I appreciate that you’re weird too. Sometimes you want to hear happy, uplifting songs, but I’m here for the people who like a good sad one. Sometimes listening to a sad song when you’re down helps you move through it. And every time someone buys and downloads a track they like, it really makes me feel good. Like I connected with someone on a personal level. Even if 100 people didn’t like the song, none of it matters when one person is feeling it. It makes me feel connected too. So, if you’re buying this track, or sharing it, thank you. It really means a lot to me personally.

 

 

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

I’d say, be yourself. Make music and write lyrics you like. Because you will drive yourself insane trying to please everyone. Music and art in general is so subjective. It’s crazy making to keep dismantling and re-writing a song based on 100 different opinions. Right something you are proud of, because once its out there, there’s no taking it back. It will be right for someone else eventually.

Right now I have two albums out, but I often re-arrange them and add to them like compilations. We add a lot of extras and remixes to older albums too. I am also going to upload a newly mastered version of my cover album: “In Another Life”.

The lyrics usually kind of just hit me all at once. I can tap out a few notes on a keyboard to get the key and chords, but I will go to Jake to flesh out the music. I take a subject or situation that I’m feeling, and try to tell that story. Then, I will record a demo track. A lot of times, that’s what ends up getting used because it usually turns out the best as far as relaying the emotion or melody ideas I had in mind. If I try to “fix” it too much, I lose some of the feeling. I hate, hate, hate autotune and normally never use it. So, I will punch in parts that need to get fixed, but if a track ends up with little flaws, but the performance was good, I will leave it as is.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

My happiest day is divided up into three: the births of my children. My saddest day was the day I’d learned that both my grandfather and uncle had passed away in the same week. My estranged family didn’t tell me until after they were already gone and buried. I didn’t have a chance to say goodbye and that hit me very hard.
