ARTIST NAME: Peyton Gilliland
SONG TITLE: Ruthless
Peyton Gilliland has already been named as a finalist in the R&B section of the John Lennon International Song Writers Competition Session II 2018 with her song entitled ‘Hopelessly’.
‘Hopelessly’ was also recently featured as a Staff Pick on Radio Airplay, twice by two different staff members.
She co-wrote this song with Hannah Arn as a 15-year-old.
The video for ‘Hopelessly’ is also being featured at The Grand Teton Film Festival this year in June.
The second song that she co-wrote with Hannah was just released November 20th, called ‘Magnetic’, and has already been streamed over 80,000 times.
‘Magnetic’ was also included on several Spotify playlists including Artist Rack and in Walgreens stores.
Radio Airplay has played her songs along with other independent stations worldwide.
They are currently being played in Australia, Germany, London, Indonesia, Japan to name a handful, and of course the US.
Her next song, ‘Ruthless’ released on March 15 and was just named a semifinalist in a field of 19,000 professional songwriters. ISC is the most prestigious international songwriter’s competition in the world.
‘Ruthless’ is being distributed by Sony Skyfall and she is currently working on her EP with the help of Lincoln Parish, former lead guitarist of Cage the Elephant.
This is your hometown girl from Albertville and she is a sophomore in HS… the stuff she is doing and creating is way harder than getting on a reality show – her competitors are people who have already made it in the music industry.
Tell us what your fans are saying about your music.
I think we are still discovering who our fans are. I have heard that I remind them of everyone from Adele to Stevie Nicks – that’s quite a spread but both of them are incredible with big vocals so I’d take either or anything in between!
Tell us the factors you consider in choosing a song as your favorite.
My favorite song to sing must touch an emotional chord with me and have to be in my range.
Tell us the names of producers you will collaborate with if you have the chance.
Lincoln Parish, former lead guitarist for Cage the Elephant turned amazing producer.
I think it would also be amazing to work with Phineas Eilish (Billie’s brother).
Tell us the names of the songwriters you will collaborate with if you have the chance.
I would love to collaborate or write with Pharrell Williams because he is a genius and Brittany Howard from Alabama Shakes – I could not love her more!
Tell us your favorite TV show and state your reason.
My favorite TV show is That ’70s Show because it is light and funny and I love clothes.
Tell us your best mood to create a song.
It is always easier for me to write when I am super sad. Not sure that is a good thing but the truth.
Tell us your interpretation of fame or success.
Success is how many people you can touch with your music.
If you can make someone feel something, or share something with you, that is ‘success.’
Tell us the names of the artists you will collaborate with if you have the chance.
Adele obvi, Khalid, Rihanna, and Beyoncé.
Tell us about your experience performing on stage for the first time or recording in the studio for the first time.
I don’t actually remember the feels from the first performance, but it was in church with so friendly crowd.
The first time I recorded in a studio it was super intimidating but fun at the same time.
Tell us how you approach songwriting.
We usually start our writes with one line or a concept and I work with some supremely talented people, Like Hannah Arn, Jason Lane, John Salaway, and Craig Wilson and we just build from there. Most of my inspirations come to me while I’m in the shower.
Tell us your opinion on blending genres or experimenting with sound.
The more experimentation the better! I don’t think genres are for the artist, just categories of music to make it easier for the fans to find what they like.
Tell us how you deal with rejection.
I don’t really care about the rejections, I don’t take it personally – it is just part of it and not everyone is going to dig it – I am not making it to be one-size-fits-all.
Elaborate on what compels you to sing.
I think music is what I am here to do.
Tell us how you record your vocals.
In the studio, I can’t even tell you what mic I prefer but I always have my vocal coach there when I record so I get the best possible sound and don’t stress my voice.
Tell us the software you used mostly for recording.
I practice but don’t do a lot of home recording – if I am doing a rough demo or song idea I’ll use GarageBand.
Discuss the selling of CDs and the selling of digital files through digital stores.
I have not marketed any CDs at all. We concentrated on streams and playlists and we have used Skyfall, an affiliate of Sony for distribution and submissions.
Elaborate on the song.
‘Ruthless’ is about an X who treated me unfairly and I decided to treat him the same way.
Elaborate on your artist’s name and the title of the album.
My artist’s name is my given name (a lot of thought went into that haha).
