PHOEBE is an independent singer, songwriter, and producer from London. Her music is distinctly pop, yet she straddles the mainstream with her pointed lyrics and playful production. Driven by her desire to break from the restrictive subjects that dominate (romance, heartbreak, sex), she writes an eclectic range of songs – some deeply mindful, and others cheekily mindless – but all of which skirt its typical content. Combining the infectious sound of the genre with lyrics that seek to challenge it, PHOEBE creates pop music with a point.

LYRICS:

When we’re hit just where it hurts
And things don’t go, as we like
They want us to lie back
Tell us “zip your lips, sit tight”
But since when was it a crime to express your mind?
Since when did we resign to a power strike?
Is 1998 slipping into the satin night?

But we’re getting louder
And stronger
We’re vexing
So they’re flexing all of their power
We’re noisy and annoying
Cos it’s our voices they’re destroying

It’s a bully’s push and shove
It’s back to school it seems
But since when have classroom snubs made it into policy?
Even someone who right now is content with everything
Can see beyond today and beyond the spring
It’s scary now to dwell on what the future might bring

Cos we’re getting louder
And stronger
We’re vexing
So they’re flexing all of their power
We’re noisy and annoying
Cos it’s our voices they’re destroying
Trapping us in ambiguities to be misused
Are those who chase their dreams through a power abuse?

This won’t impose one view upon the rest
It protects them all and gives a means for them to be expressed
It won’t exclude ideas at either end
So thanks for making enemies urgent friends

Cos we’re getting louder
And stronger
We’re vexing
So they’re flexing all of their power
We’re noisy and annoying
Cos it’s our voices they’re destroying
Cos we’re getting louder
And stronger
We’re vexing
So they’re flexing all of their power
We’re noisy and annoying
Cos it’s our voices they’re destroying

Discuss your recording experience with your producer.
I am both the producer and the recording artist, so the relationship is pretty straightforward ha-ha! Having control really increases my freedom as an artist. I can record and develop my ideas at the same time rather than having to do the vocals all at once. I think it allows the track to grow really organically, adding in different layers as I go along.

Discuss what comes first and last while creating a song.
For me, lyrics always come first. Often I’ll have some concept of a melody and rhythm when I’m writing them but I flesh that out after the lyrics are complete and I’m happy with the message I’m getting across.

Tell us the piece of advice you will give to a new artist.
Music is a skill and, if you work at it, you will keep improving. When I started, I found it so daunting looking at established artists and feeling so far behind. But like anything, if you commit to it you can really grow. I guess I’d just say to persist and be patient.

Discuss your worse experience in the music business.
I found it pretty shocking when I read that only 2% of all music producers are female. I think because there are so many female artists people assume that gender inequality is not such a thing in the music business. But, behind the scenes, it really still is a man’s world. That can be pretty disheartening when you’re trying to break in. But the upside is that the 2% who are women – the 2% rising – are the most proactive and supportive group and really raise each other up.

Tell us how you make instrumentation to your song.
This track was pretty simple. I wrote it to be the anthem for a campaign against the Policing Bill in the UK. As a protest song and one that hopefully people would sing along to, it had to be clean and catchy. For that, I wanted it to be as poppy as possible. The instrumentation is all synth-based – I make my sounds on Ableton and then play them through a midi keyboard, laying them onto the track. As the song, and the campaign, is called ‘Noisy and Annoying’, I wanted the instrumentation to have this edge – almost annoying but in a good way. It’s a very simple and repetitive melody but there are some pretty crazy sounds in there!

Tell us how you feel when you sing and your fans sing along to your song.
The passing of the new Policing Bill is a pretty scary prospect. It would criminalize legal and peaceful forms of protest in the UK, silencing our democratic voice and eradicating a brilliant tradition that has achieved so much over its long history. The song is in reaction to that and there are definitely notes of fear in there. But more than anything, it’s a celebration of the history of protest and free expression, so when I sing it I feel pretty liberated and empowered. I hope it agitates people to feel the same way and to take action in support of the campaign.

Tell us the goals you aim to achieve when creating a song.
This song had a very acute focus – to spread the word about Noisy and Annoying; the campaign and to rally people around its cause. I always want my songs to have a message – that’s why I start with the lyrics when I’m writing. With this song, they’re direct and straight to the point, which is not always the case with my music. But my aim with all my songs is to create something that chimes with people – music is alcohol for the soul, so if I make you feel something I’ve done my job.

Tell us your approach to writing.
Writing is a very free process for me. It comes and it goes – I’ll go through phases when I’m writing multiple songs a day, and then some when I don’t write anything for weeks. It all really depends on how my creativity flows. With a song like this, where I’ve got something specific that needs writing about, it’s different. But if I feel inspired by the subject – and I definitely was by this campaign – it comes very easily.

Tell us how you plan to develop a unique music style.
I’m a pretty restless person and don’t really like doing the same thing twice. My creativity flows from a place of curiosity – to try new things and learn new skills – and my taste is very eclectic. So as a producer, I am constantly challenging myself, and, for PHOEBE, I produce pop songs with a twist. It’s the same with my message – the songs may sound like pop, but the lyrics aren’t what you’d expect from the genre. But, at my core, I am a singer. There is always going to be a sense of grounding and uniformity through my voice. Though I play around with it a bit, the classical tone that I developed as a young choral singer runs through all my music and will be what makes it most recognizable and distinct.

Tell us how you record your song.
This song was a bit of a mad rush. It’s being used in a video for the campaign, which had a tight deadline. So I wrote, recorded, and mixed the song in four days – barely emerging from my studio. During the lockdown, I built myself a little music studio, which has everything I need – a vocal booth with homemade acoustic panels, some cork soundproofing which I’ve turned into a pinboard (full of pictures), some monitors for mixing, and my synth. It’s a very cute and colorful room, which I’m happy to spend hours on end in.

Tell us if you are collaborating with other songwriters or you write alone.
So far, I’ve written alone for PHOEBE. But I am also part of a band, called With What Eyes, in which I collaborate with my brilliant and talented bandmate Callista. I’m hoping to do some collaboration after my EP released.

Discuss your experience with fans.
I’m at the start of my career and over the last year, there haven’t been many opportunities to be in front of a live audience.

Elaborate on the song.
The song is designed to empower its listeners to make noise about the Policing Bill and to protest for the right to protest. It’s a celebration of free, democratic expression and how far the UK has come, thanks to protesting – our rights to vote, to love who we want, to earn a wage and so much more are all thanks to the people who took to the streets before us and demanded them for us. And that’s under threat with the new Bill. Hopefully, the song inspires people to show their support for the campaign.

Elaborate on your artist’s name and the title of the album.
My name’s Phoebe – it’s as simple as that. And then I put it in all capital letters because something about that screamed pop music to me. My band is more alternative and ethereal, so I wanted to make a statement with my solo work that I was doing something different. The title of this release and also my coming EP is ‘Noisy and Annoying’ after the campaign. It’s fitting for all my songs as the message is what makes them unique – and free expression is the cornerstone of that. So many pop songs say the same thing – our discographies are over-saturated with songs about love and heartbreak and sex. It can seem pretty restrictive for a new artist who has other things they want to write about. So I’ve written about anything but. I reckon that’s sufficiently noisy and annoying to warrant the title!
