2018 could be regarded as one of Jonathan Zarola’s most pivotal years as a producer and electronic artist under the name UNBLOOM – a kind of year that an artist can leap off of, or simply crumble from.

Having released three critically acclaimed singles that prominently featured his vocals – Chances, I Followed, and Lost Myself; the young artist cemented his place in the “rising stars” category with adoring support from tastemakers such as EARMILK, Cloudkid, and Peter Robinson of Popjustice. The singles acted as an affirmation of Zarola’s ability to be a “complete artist”.

The logical move would be to continue the trend; lean into the frontman persona and ride the wave.

But Zarola, first and foremost, is a craftsman and talent curator. His first single of 2019, ‘Best Believe’ (featuring the stunning vocals of rising alt-pop artist Connor Morand) confirms this statement.

What Zarola does so well with the UNBLOOM project is add subtlety and nuance to the accessible; to layer and adjust textures that encourage multiple listens.

The fact that ‘Best Believe’ has one of the catchiest hooks of 2019 doesn’t hurt either.

Perhaps his ability to create songs with emotional weight and danceable energy is one of the reasons why EARMILK hailed him as an “electronic prodigy,” and why he continues to push the boundaries of what the UNBLOOM project could be.

.

.

.

Share your life story with us.

I began my music career as a drummer for jazz, funk, and indie projects. The process of recording with these bands really inspired me to take up production on my own time.

The desire to produce music also coincided with my love of Disclosure’s debut album “Settle” which completely changed my life. I knew from that point on that I wanted to make dance-based music.

.

.

.

List the names of those that have supported you so far in your music career and use this opportunity to thank them.

I want to thank my Mom and Dad for being so supportive of my passion and helping me when they can to make my dreams a reality.

By extension, I want to thank my girlfriend Hannah for always being so patient with me during this turbulent time of pursuing music.

In the blogosphere, I want to thank Adam from the Soundsgood Blog, Sav from The Music Mermaid, and Peter Robinson from Popjustice. Y’all have been amazing towards my craft and me!

.

.

.

Narrate your experience while recording in the studio or while touring.

Being in the studio with Connor Morand has been a revelation for me. Sometimes, you just find that person who completes your process better than you do, and Connor is certainly that to me.

Writing ‘Best Believe’ was an amazing experience, and I knew from the start that his sincerity and emotional honesty would carry the song beyond genre-confines.

.

.

.

Discuss your song writing.

My song writing begins with an emotional feeling. Sometimes it stems from the drum pattern, other times from the chord progression. Regardless, I have to feel something in order to get excited about finishing it. If I don’t, I toss it.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your future projects.

More collaboration is in the works! Some localized to me, but others from over the border. Exciting times ahead!

.

.

.

Tell us what you are doing to increase your fan base.

I’m just trying to engage with my fan base as much as possible with my socials, and being as honest as I can with myself on platforms such as Twitter and Instagram.

I think people appreciate someone who keeps it real and doesn’t bullshit them. That’s what I aim for.

.

.

.

Tell us that point in time you wanted to give up on your music career.

Almost every day I combat the urge to give up and quit. This is a tough business and it chews you up and spits you out without a single care for your mental or physical health.

But through it all, I find myself writing and producing because I love it still. I love the creative process; I love the grind.

.

.

.

Go into detail on how you make your instrumentation or melody.

I wish there was a model for how I create melodies (it would make my life so much easier), but the truth is, I just sit at the keyboard and feel what works and what doesn’t.

I always ask: “does this evoke an emotional response?” if yes, then the idea is built upon.

.

.

.

Tell us your complete understanding of music licensing.

There’s a difference between a publisher, and a “licensing vault.” The former actively shops your music for proper placements in TV and Movies, and the later simply holds onto your music in anticipation of an appropriate commercial spot.

.

.

.

Tell us your favourite genre of music.

Electronic (in the broadest sense of the word).

.

.

.

Tell us the theme of most of your songs.

Most UNBLOOM’s songs deal with relationships (not only between lovers, but with anyone really), and the precariousness that exists in these relationships.

.

.

.

Elaborate on this song.

‘Best Believe’ is a song that explores the hard truths of what it means to be in a relationship – to be in love. Sometimes, it involves confrontation and the ensuing pain of getting to the core of where the relationship stands, or, quite frankly, doesn’t stand at all.

And sometimes the relationship surprises you; the pain is temporary because the outcome is worthwhile. That’s the kind of sentiment Connor and I wanted to explore in ‘Best Believe’.

.

.

.

Discuss digital distribution and streaming.

It’s probably the worst part about the music industry, and yet it’s completely vital to the success of any artist hoping to make this a full-time career.

Make sure you get your song ready for distribution as early as possible, so as to give yourself enough time to pitch to playlist curators.

.

.

.

Tell us numerous ways that artists can boost their revenue.

Selling merch in person or online, or going on tour / playing intimate shows are traditional ways of boosting revenue.

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on self-training and enrolling in an educational institution to study music.

I’m not professionally trained by any means, but I do think there is value in getting an education of some kind. I have a Master’s degree in English literature and criticism, and I’m so grateful to have that background in critical thought. It has helped with lyric writing and session work with other artists immensely.

.

.

.

Go on at length on what it takes to write a hit song.

At this point, who really even knows what a hit song consists of? Streaming has changed the model somewhat, but I guess the most consistent component of a “hit” song is a catchy melody and engaging, relatable lyrics. If it can make people emote and move, that’s a good sign too.

.

.

.

State your artist’s name and elaborate on it.

My artist name ‘UNBLOOM’ was inspired by the late poet Thomas Hardy; he used to place the prefix “UN” in front of words that often didn’t require them. By doing so, it would draw attention to the root word, and also the inverse of its function. I thought that was cool when applied to the word “bloom.”

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

The song is titled ‘Best Believe.’ It’s an act of desperation and affirmation.

In the first music video Jayden wants to tell about the world of dreams and everything related: who are the best dreamers?

Children, who live in a reality where everything is possible and love is something that you feel and express every day, without a real motive and so it becomes unconditional without prejudice towards others and without limits imposed by society.

A face you’ll hardly forget and a tale you’ll want to live in first person.

Creativity, emotions and a lot of craziness in the adventure of this new player in the dance / pop international music scene.

Nobody knows who hides under the Panda but it doesn’t really matter since Jayden represents much more.

He presents himself as a showman on social networks accumulating over 250k followers on Instagram in just a few months and 6 million views on YouTube in his 2 presentation videos.

The truth is only one though… music is his life and music will be the way with which he’ll tell his tales. He represents the surreal border between reality and magic. Jayden will guide his audience through a continuous adventure through his songs…

Born in Ourense (Spain), this computer engineer began his musical training when he was only 10 years old studying piano for several years in the Conservatorio Profesional de Música de Ourense.

He has reached world’s top charts with his productions: Djdownload Global Chart (Top 10), DJ Tunes (Top 100 Dance), TheDJList (Top 20 Spanish DJs), TopSpain (Top 10), Vicious Magazine Radioshow Chart (Top 10), Hypeddit House Chart (Top 100)… and many more.

He was also nominated to Vicious Music Awards 2011 as Best Producer and Best Deejay.

He is the founder and owner of Unconventional Records.

.

.

.

State your reason for choosing music as a career.

When I was a kid I was dazzled with electronic music compilations and songs, so when I was 10 I started to study piano in the Professional Conservatory of my city. When I was 16 years old I started to play with turntables and sequencers… and I discovered my real passion: producing music.

.

.

.

Tell us how you write the lyrics to your song.

I use to search for feelings inside me. I think the music is a way of sharing what you have inside.

.

.

.

Share your press releases and reviews with us.

Well, I have to say that we are a small independent label, so we don’t use major marketing techniques like press releases. We are contacting one by one with DJs, media and radio stations all over the world which could be interested in our works. And it has been working, we received tons of support, and we are very thankful for it.

.

.

.

Discuss your life outside the music world.

It’s a regular and healthy life! Sports, family… you know nothing special at all.

.

.

.

Discuss your music career.

I have been working with lots of labels from different countries for years, producing my own tracks, remixing for artists and even producing for other artists…

I decided to start running my own label some years ago because I wanted to have the full control of the process and even support new artists. I wanted the freedom to create my own sound, with no requirements coming from labels. I’m really proud of it.

.

.

.

Elaborate on your artist’s name.

It’s simply my name and surname.

.

.

.

List your five favourite music videos with reasons.

X-Press 2 Featuring David Byrne – Lazy – really funny.

666 – Supa Dupa-Fly – technologically awesome 3d models for those years.

Brooklyn Bounce – Bass, Beats & Melody – cool, really modern stuff.

Deepswing – In The Music – I would like to go to a party in a copter as well.

DJ Tonka – She Knows You – it reminds me of Ibiza’s beaches and parties.

.

.

.

Tell us your source of inspiration.

I get my inspiration from the 90s and early 2000s classics. I think it was the best period of electronic music.

.

.

.

Tell us your experience on dealing with fans.

Hahaha, I’m not at that level! But it’s always nice when people get in touch with you because they like your music.

.

.

.

Elaborate on the recording of this song.

The process is “easy” because, except for the vocals part, I can do the rest in my home studio, because all the other parts are electronic and don’t need to be “recorded” (synth stuff).

.

.

.

Tell us about your future projects.

I’m working in a cinematic/orchestral project under the a.k.a. INTHEGO.

I’m remixing a vocal track from another artist too. Both in the short term.

.

.

.

List the names of those that have supported you so far.

It would be impossible because I have always been supported by family, friends, DJs, and media!

I want to thank all of them for all this support and love.

.

.

.

Tell us your point of view on vocal tuning.

Well, I have conflicting feelings about that. I have to say that I like to use tools as FlexPitch, Harmony Engine and similar to create chorus and some effects, but I believe that some “fake singers” wouldn’t exist without them. I’m very lucky because I have always worked with very talented singers and musicians, so the tuning was never intended to fix any problem.

.

.

.

Tell us your thought on quality and quantity for the release of songs.

Right now, I prefer to release few songs with the highest quality possible.

.

.

.

Tell us your viewpoint on comparing music career to non-music career.

It’s difficult to live only from music so… I don’t know. Maybe you are very talented and you don’t ever get a good agreement or deal with a label… and it doesn’t really matter. If you do your music, you are an artist anyway.

.

.

.

Tell us your opinion on categorizing music into genres and sub-genres.

Some of them are marketing tags… I’m not into that… let’s call it music.

.

.

.

State the genre you despise most with reason.

I despise fake artists, ghost produced people… etc.

As I said, I like talent and I believe in the hard work.

It doesn’t have to do with genres.

.

.

.

List your five favourite movies with reasons.

Gran Torino – Clint Eastwood is god!

Avatar – nice development and story.

E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial – oh common, he has a foot instead of a head, lovely!

The Hunger Games (Part 1) – awesome story and the best part of all.

American Sniper – I love military movies.

.

.

.

State the title of the song and the meaning.

Hypnotize me: we all know somebody whose look dazzles you, isn’t it?

The future is promising for German producer duo, and cousins, Furkan & Jelbrim. The group was formed in March 2018, after their first single “Deserve It”, grabbed the attention of the dance community worldwide, gathering almost 1 million streams on Spotify since its release only a few months ago.

Both Furkan and Jelbrim first started producing at the age of 12, and have been honing their dance/house/pop fusion sound since.

After a long time performing as solo artists, the cousins decided to reunite their multi-genre experience, and attempt to establish their own unique style, somewhere within the dance-pop realm.

Reuniting also means a new opportunity for business – the duo is currently building their label “Fritz Music Records”, with plans of releasing new music throughout 2018.
