Dom Youdan

Tell us your real name, country of birth, date of birth and  childhood experience.

Dominic Youdan, born in England. I’m a child of the 80s. I grew up in Hong Kong. Earliest memory is accidentally throwing a tennis ball into a wasp nest. I can still see it clear as day, even now. Holy shit those guys were scary.

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience and skills.

I always knew I could sing but I got into music pretty late, because I was absolutely terrified of singing live. Just the idea of sharing something so personal with people freaked me out, but at 24 I finally got over it. I had a bit of catching up to do so I taught myself guitar, piano and production, and have been giving it a go ever since.

I went for something crazy with the band name. I lost the ‘inic’ and called myself…Dom Youdan. I know right.

Tell us about your genre, concept and idea behind your music video and the song.

I’m basically a clash of genres. A singer-songwriter who loves a synth, a folk artist who can’t get enough of a good drop. I’m ‘Stranger Things’ meets ‘Tracey Chapman’.

“Tigerlily” is about the conversation you have with yourself; that moment you realise your heart is hooked on someone. It’s incredible but really daunting feeling. I find love to be an extremely personal emotion, even though you share it with someone.

I’m very proud of the clip and of the story it tells. We went to the Blue Mountains in NSW and shot in these stunning, serene settings. The directors (Buchanan and Shepherd) did an incredible job in capturing the emotion and premise of the song. You’re not sure if you’re following someone or if you’re dreaming along with them. It’s just beautiful; each shot draws you in and helps make every lyric stand out.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

I try to make every song look at life and love in a way that feels a little different to what we’ve heard before. Lyrics and the melody are always at the forefront of a song before I start to think about the production. I guess, I’m a songwriter first and foremost, but the beat is never too far away.

It’s still very much early days in terms of my experience with the music industry. I’ve played my fair share of shitty gigs in London and Australia, but that’s part of discovering yourself as an artist. If I could go back, I’d play them again.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

At the moment it’s just me, my guitar, keys and drum pad in the band. We have a blast. The EP was co-produced by two amazing artists in Xavier Dunn and One Above. They are ludicrously talented.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

There’s definitely a secret into writing a hit…I just need to figure it out. Ha, I’ve no idea! I think you need to write about what interests you, don’t be afraid to break the rules, but appreciate ‘the hook’. It’s a thing. People like connecting with a song.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Give it a shot. Don’t be afraid to fail. Don’t be afraid to fail again.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

My first EP “Tigerlily” has finally dropped, and people are listening! Whoop. It just got premiered on CLASH, Triple J and added to a couple of Spotify playlists, which was pretty nifty.

Name five biggest artists that you like.

Ummm, in no particular order…The Weeknd, The War on Drugs, Perfume Genius, Kelela, Frank Ocean.

.

.

.

Name the artists you have collaborated with before in your songs or artists you are willing to collaborate with in the future if you have the chance to do so.

I worked with my good friend and talented Bec Sandridge for my first single, ‘Don’t Love Me’. Hopefully I’m about to team up with a couple of other guys soon . As for dream artists, Mura Masa would be insane, I’ve been following his stuff since the beginning. He’s outrageous.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

I’d like to think I’d do something sensible like helping my parents out, start a label…but I’d probably just do something stupid like build a go-kart track in my garden. Though before I could do that, I’d need a garden.
