Essen Hiort

Tell us your real names, country of birth, date of birth and childhood experience.

For now we prefer to call ourselves Essen and Hiort, from Sweden. Essen is from the very north of Sweden, once a talented soccer player, Hiort is from the very south of Sweden a meditator from childhood. Age, between 40 and the very end.

Tell us about your music career, your band name, musical background, experience, and skills.

Essen has produced and written for well-known Swedish bands, mostly hip-hop. Essens skills in production and programming give him a natural role in Essen Hiort. Hiorts history is in indie bands, he also spent a decade writing songs for other artists and for TV commercial. His skills on guitar give Essen Hiort a vibe of indie.

.

Tell us about your genre, concept, and idea behind your music video and the song.

We can describe our music as a blend of urban music and indie. I think you can hear that we are from Scandinavia with a bit of melancholia in the chord progression. We love collaboration with different singers that emphasize the energy of the song.

.

.

Tell us everything that we need to know about you as a musician and the ups and downs you have faced in the music business.

I think we are both deeply in love with the creation of songwriting and atmospheric productions. We have very clear roles when we work which is a great advantage. Essen takes 100% care of the production and the sounds of the details, and Hiort is more into chord progressions, melody, playing the instruments etc. We both been Grammy nominated for songwriting and productions but also faced times when we had to live on bread and water and just keep on keeping on.

.

.

.

Tell us about other members of your band, music producer, crew or music video director, how the song was recorded and how the music video was shot.

The song was recorded in our studio at Södermalm in Stockholm. The song was a collaborative writing with a talented top liner Patrick Berggren. We knew La Luz’s great voice from earlier co-writing sessions and thought the song and her voice would be a perfect match.

.

.

Tell us how long you have been in the music industry, your experience, and your future goal.

We have been around in the business for quite some time. We both released music late 90’s in totally different genres. It changed a lot in one way but at the same time, creative work is pretty much the same. It’s all about following your heart and write songs that you love. We can’t imagine not doing it so I guess the work is never done, no goal, just keep on what we love doing.

.

.

.

Tell us what inspires you to write, compose and sing.

We are both big listeners and get inspired by a lot of good music. Curious about new stuff. Strength is that we refer to quite different bands and projects. Essen always keeps an eye on the hip-hop scene and Hiort never gets tired of bands like War on drugs, Radiohead or even punk music from the early 80’s.

.

.

.

Tell us the secret behind making a hit song.

We don’t talk in terms of hits when we create. We are looking for something else while creating. The core of the song; sound wise and in terms of depth and energy we know how we want it to be felt in the body. We work with rather slow bpm and a lot of pitch downs to find that energy. Good songs always have the potential to become a hit song.

.

.

.

Tell us the message you will like to pass to your fans out there.

For example, “Deep As The Night” is a song about the art of letting go when you go through stressful times. About how hard it can be to take the time to rest when situations and people crave one’s attention. And the importance of seeing each other emotionally in a relationship and nurturing the romantic bond.

.

.

.

Tell the kind of advice you will give to an upcoming artist.

Do what you love. Stay creative even when obstacles come your way because they will come now and then. Set up a lot of collaboration like featuring vocalists, co-writing etc. Our experience is that it’s always worth it and the results very often reach greater heights. Open up and get inspired by other people’s way of working and stay curious.

Elaborate on your music careers, albums, songs, tours, recognition or awards you might have obtained.

Essen came up as a hip-hop DJ in the mid 90’s and used to play the biggest clubs in Scandinavia until beat making took over in 2003. He’s been Grammy-nominated in Sweden. Hiort came up as an indie-rock artist in Sweden. He had a famous “Swindie” in the 90’s and learned to play guitar and write songs as a teen. Hiort has been a songwriter for decades, successfully writing for artists globally.

.

.

.

Tell us how you write your lyrics, compose, sing and record in the studio.

We start from an embryo which can be a kick in a specific beat, a guitar figure or a chord progression. From a production sketch, a top line will come to life in collaboration with a singer who also records the voice. We are quite selective and it has to fall into the world of Essen Hiort’s sound that we somehow the two of us agree upon. It´s something we can feel in the body and normally songs are quite slow and laid back tempo-wise. A few details make big changes in the songs and we are not adding stuff that doesn’t make sense for us. It’s normally more a process of restraining and taking away.

Tell us about your happiest day and saddest day.

One good day was when we wrote “Deep As The Night”. Immediately we felt that; here is the sound of Essen Hiort. This is what we want to do! Sad days come and go. More private stuff.

Tell us how you will spend a million dollars.

First, some cool studio ware, like a few preamps and probably another Gibson guitar. A writing trip to a nice spot in the Midteranenan to finish a couple of songs in progress. Some investments in startups, helping people in need; like immigrants on their way starting up a new life here in Sweden.
