State your reason for choosing music as a career.
I just loved it from age nine or so. I knew that’s what I wanted to do.

Tell us how you write the lyrics to your song.
I try to find a theme or concept first – then I try to build visual images around that.

Wen Tilley is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter/producer. Originally from Louisiana, Tilley began playing guitar at age 11 and was playing professionally by age 13.
He graduated from the Baton Rouge High Magnet School program winning All-State Jazz Guitarist two years in a row his junior and senior years.
Later, he formed the rock group, Func Haus, who were picked up by Chrysalis Records.
He then began a career in music production opening a studio in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Kingfish Recordings Inc., where he produced and mixed hundreds of local artists’ recordings and composed and produced three film scores.
Moving to Nashville in 2001, Tilley has been mostly a “gun for hire” as a producer/mixer/guitarist for various artists.
Tilley has recorded four records, “Call Off Yer Dogs”, “Rodear”, “Autonomous Spheres”, and his latest release, “Runaways.”

Discuss your life outside the music world.
I’m a father of three beautiful daughters.

Discuss your music career.
I started playing guitar at age 10 and was gigging professionally with cover bands at 13.
I studied jazz in high school and got selected All-State Jazz Guitarist two years in a row.
I went to the Berklee College of Music, came home, and started a band called “Func Haus” who secured a short-lived deal with EMI / Chrysalis Records.
I built a recording studio in south Louisiana. I recorded and mixed hundreds of records and three film scores. Moved to Nashville where I now live and work.

Elaborate on your artist’s name.
My real name is Wendell. And when I found out some dude in China owned I decided to go with my nickname, “Wen” for my artist career.

Tell us your source of inspiration.
Existence. Everything that entails the human experience.

Tell us your experience with dealing with fans.
Most of my fans are the sweetest people. I love them and appreciate them more than words can express.

Elaborate on the recording of this song.
This song was recorded with two extremely gifted musicians – Marcus Finnie on drums, and Jerry Navarro on bass, both from Nashville. We recorded at Omnistudios in Nashville as well.

Tell us about your future projects.
I am finishing a new record now which I’m very excited about. The texture is almost completely different than “Runaways”, which was more “Riff Rock”.
This record has more electronic influences with very heavy lyrical themes – Can’t wait to release it.

List the names of those that have supported you so far.
My wife, mom, and kids are my greatest supporters. : )

Tell us your point of view on vocal tuning.
I try not to use it, but if it helps the overall presentation of the song, which, to me, is the most important part of this, then I’m not opposed.

Tell us your thought on quality and quantity for the release of songs.
Quality is more important than quantity in my opinion. I’d rather hear one brilliant song than twenty underwhelming ones.

Tell us your viewpoint on comparing a music career to a non-music career.
A music career is a tough road. Perhaps art careers, subjective in their appeal to consumers, are difficult to be successful generally.

Tell us your opinion on categorizing music into genres and sub-genres.
I guess it’s necessary for those in the music industry, though I wonder if today’s music listener is that concerned.

State the genre you despise most with reason.
“Despise” is a harsh term, but I suppose “Pop Country” tops the list.
The stories lack the substance older country music did. So, it’s a bit condescending, presuming those who consume it are shallow and uneducated.

List your five favorite movies with reasons.
A brilliant script illustrating the mendacity of the pro-war mindset, contrasting those indirectly affected adversely with those profiting.
At Eternity’s Gate
The life of Van Gogh expressed brilliantly through the color and sound of the film as well as an incredible performance by Willem Dafoe.
A beautiful story with great songs and performances.
The Godfather
Simply perfect in every way.
Mulholland Drive
Disturbingly perfect as is the directing of David Lynch.

State the title of the song and the meaning.
“Yours for Life”
This song is about that moment of inner conflict upon realizing you may have found your one true love that one you might say “Yours for Life” to.

State the title of the album and the reason for choosing the title.
“Runaways” – This is a song on the record dealing with ending a long-term relationship and how even after it’s over one still feels like they deserved something or “ran away”. I thought it sounded like a good title.
