Zen Parks began as a solo concept in 2016 by singer/songwriter Mateo Guidali.
A year later, Rafael Aritmendi would join the project including drums and percussion instruments to the mix.
Matt and Rafa met in high school where they started sharing their eclectic music taste.
Matt is an avid fan of the ’60s and 70’s music but he also started to find a taste for modern bands like Glass Animals, Jungle, Alt-J, Tame Impala, etc…
Rafa grew up listening to rock and metal music and is also a founder member of the metal band Deathsurrection and a drummer for Avulsed.
Together they found a way to mix different styles and they usually don’t like to define their music by a specific genre.
They published a self-financed E.P. called Mysteries of Venus in 2017 and just released their crowdfunded second E.P. called Times of Sorrow.
Their biggest strength is that they like to experiment with different sounds and genres without diverging too much from an overall pop feel.

Interview with Matt:
Discuss your recording experience with your producer.
Our recording experience didn’t last more than a week. We knew what we wanted from the get-go and we were working with our usual producer Brais Ruibal (Reno Studios, Madrid) who also worked on our first E.P.

Discuss what comes first and last while creating a song.
For this E.P. it all started with the chorus. When I thought of a catchy rhythm I would contact Rafa so we could start building together with the overall feel of the song and later on add the last twitches from home.

Tell us the piece of advice you will give to a new artist.
Be ready to get a lot of rejections. Not everybody has the same taste and some critics are ruthless with their rejections but believe in what you do and don’t give up. In the end, you’re creating music because you love doing it. Never forget that.

Discuss your worse experience in the music business.
As independent artists, we don’t have a really bad experience. We may differ from some aspects of the music business nowadays but you also have to learn how to adapt to modern times.

Tell us how you deal with rejection.
The first rejections are the hardest to read. They make you rethink why you did what you did, but after a while, you start to see a pattern between the good and the bad. It’s normal. That’s how the world works.

Tell us what you are doing to impact the people around you.
In this digital era, we think people feel more alone than ever. It’s weird. We live in a hyper-connected world but we’re less in touch on a personal level. We like to be honest with our lyrics and try to connect with our listeners.

Tell us the music that makes you happy.
We have very different tastes in music but I guess we really enjoy anything with a good groove.

Tell us how you make instrumentation to your song.
It all starts with simple chords to follow up the chorus’s lyrics. After that, we usually implement the drums and percussion, and lastly, we start embellishing the song with small synth details and guitar riffs.

Tell us how you feel when you sing and your fans sing along to your song.
It’s the best feeling in the world. It makes you feel like it is all worth it.

Tell us the goals you aim to achieve when creating a song.
The goal is to make something you like. Then you hope someone likes what you like and creates a connection with it.

Discuss your approach to writing.
I guess we use music as some kind of psychotherapist – A way to exteriorize our fears and anxieties.

Tell us how you plan to develop a unique music style.
We just try to mix stuff up. We come from different musical backgrounds but we like to experiment. Our sound ends up with a pop backbone but the polished details come from different styles and genres.

Tell us how to record a song.
Just write and write. Good songs will come up but also bad ones. You just got to keep the creative flow running and write about anything that comes into your mind. Then it’s just about putting the pieces together.

Tell us if you are collaborating with other songwriters or you write alone.
For now, it’s just us. We’d love to feature someone at some point but we’re going step by step for now.

Discuss your experience with fans.
We’re a small band. The fans in our home country are basically our friends and family but we’d love to go abroad and meet our fans overseas.

Discuss your experience with booking gigs and shows.
For now, we’ve only done a couple of small gigs in Madrid.

Tell us if you consider a song placement in TV or Film.
We’d love that.

Elaborate on the song.
IDK may sound like a confusing romance but the lyrics actually point out internal dialogue and the understanding with one’s ego.

Elaborate on your artist name and the title of the album.
The name Zen Parks came when I was living in Barcelona where I used to go meditate and relax…
